Plan would help military families take leave (AP)
WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration proposed new rules Monday to help military families care for service members when they are injured or called to active duty on short notice.
The proposal expands eligibility under the Family and Medical Leave Act, which allows employees to take unpaid leave for certain medical or family emergencies.
First lady Michelle Obama joined Labor Secretary Hilda Solis to announce the plan, which would let caregivers take leave to help family members up to five years after they leave the military. Current law does not cover service members who have left the armed forces.
"We want to recognize the extraordinary dedication, sacrifice and service of our nation's caregivers, not simply with words but with deeds," Obama said during a Labor Department ceremony attended by dozens of military members and their families.
The rules also would expand leave to cover families of those in the regular armed forces, not just families of National Guard members and reservists.
The proposal would allow spouses, children or parents take up to 12 weeks of leave from work to help a service member deployed on short notice. Family caregivers could attend military functions, deal with child care issues, or make financial and legal arrangements without fear of losing their jobs.
"Many service members come home stressed, ill and injured," Solis said. "They need attention, care and support from the people that love them most."
Family members also would get up to 26 weeks of leave to care for recent veterans who were injured or became ill in the line of duty. That includes conditions that don't arise until after a veteran has left military service.
The plan expands from five days to 15 days the amount of time an employee can take off work to spend with a service member who is on leave to rest or recuperate.
Labor officials will consider comments for the next 60 days before considering whether to make the proposed rules final.

Science-art is becoming an increasingly popular form of science communication and entertainment. Asia stocks fall as US economic growth falls short
BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets fell Monday, with slower-than-expected growth in the U.S. and uncertainty about a tentative deal to resolve Greece's debt crisis weighing on investor sentiment.
Benchmark oil slipped to near $99 per barrel while the dollar rose against the euro but fell against the yen.
Japan's Nikkei 225 index shed 0.6 percent to 8,789.04. South Korea's Kospi was 1.3 percent lower at 1,939.90 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 0.5 percent to 20,401.32. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.4 percent at 4,272.70.
Benchmarks in Singapore, Indonesia, India and the Philippines also fell. Shares in mainland China were mixed after being closed for a week for Chinese New Year holidays. Taiwan and New Zealand rose.
European leaders were to meet later Monday in Brussels to discuss austerity and belt-tightening measures as well as a tentative deal reached Saturday between Greece and its private investors that could avert a disastrous Greek default on its debt.
If the deal holds and works, it will help prevent a potential shock to the world banking system. But it doesn't resolve the weakening economic conditions in Greece and other European nations as they rein in spending to get their debts under control.
Stan Shamu of IG Markets in Melbourne said that "the Greece debt issues will remain a source of uncertainty and might dampen the risk mood ahead of the EU summit today."
Under the agreement, investors holding 206 billion euros ($272 billion) in Greek bonds would exchange them for bonds with half the face value. The replacement bonds would have a longer maturity and pay a lower interest rate.
The deal would reduce Greece's annual interest expense from about 10 billion euros to about 4 billion euros. When the bonds mature, Greece would have to pay its bondholders only 103 billion euro.
Some analysts said stocks were taking a breather after post-New Year rallies in several markets that were spurred by signs of improvement in the U.S. economy and Europe's debt crisis stabilizing. Hong Kong's Hang Seng, for example, is up more than 11 percent since the beginning of the year. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 is 5.7 percent higher.
"Probably it's a case of the market getting a little bit tired. We've had quite a significant rally now, and that's been based on some news that was mildly encouraging out of Europe," said Ric Spooner, chief market analyst at CMC Markets in Sydney.
"But we may have arrived at a level where the market will need a bit further concrete evidence and news to continue the rally," Spooner said.
Gold-related stocks rose after the precious metal posted a nearly 1 percent gain Friday, as disappointing U.S. economic growth boosted the metal's safe-haven appeal. Lao Feng Xiang Co. Ltd., a major gold retailer, rose 1.1 percent in Shanghai.
Shares of CNK International, a South Korean mineral development company, plunged 14.9 percent after company executives were implicated in a stock manipulation scheme, Yonhap News agency said.
Japan's Mitsubishi Electric Corp. plummeted 13 percent after the Defense Ministry and the Cabinet Satellite Intelligence Center said they would not sign contracts with the electric machinery manufacturer, which acknowledged it had overcharged on defense and space-related projects, Kyodo News agency reported.
On Wall Street, stocks mostly fell Friday after the government said the U.S. economy grew more slowly than expected in the last three months of 2011.
The economy grew at an annual rate of 2.8 percent in the October-December quarter. That was the fastest of 2011 but lower than the 3 percent that economists were looking for.
Traders are awaiting more data this week for clues about which way the U.S. economy is headed. On Wednesday, the Institute for Supply Management will release its manufacturing index for January. The Labor Department will release monthly employment data Friday.
"Because the market has been expecting rather good economic data from the U.S. ... I am afraid if those figures disappoint the market, it may trigger further correction in the stock market," said Louis Wong, dealing director of Phillip Securities Ltd.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.6 percent to 12,660.46. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 0.2 percent to 1,316.33. The Nasdaq composite rose 0.4 percent to 2,816.55.
Benchmark oil for March delivery was down 50 cents to $99.06 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 14 cents to end at $99.56 per barrel on the Nymex on Friday.
In currencies, the euro fell to $1.3179 from $1.3208 late Friday in New York. The dollar fell to 76.67 yen from 76.72 yen.

Newt Gingrich Defends Space Plans, Says He Will 'Change Washington Decisively'
Newt Gingrich on Sunday morning defended his much-ridiculed pitch for a space colony on the moon by drawing a distinction between himself and what he described as Mitt Romney's technocratic timidity.
During Thursday night's GOP debate in Florida, the former Massachusetts governor reacted to Gingrich's space colony plans with derision. Noting his 25 years in business, Romney said, "If I had a business executive come to me and say they wanted to spend a few hundred billion dollars to put a colony on the moon, I'd say, 'You're fired.'"
The former House speaker responded Sunday on "This Week," saying, "You know, Romney's run for six years, and his message on the space coast this week was he would assemble a group of experts to think about what he might do as president, some day, possibly."
"I'm very different. I think that we can, in fact, fix Social Security with a bold new plan," he added. "I think that we can, in fact, re-launch the country with an American energy plan that lowers the price of gasoline and generates huge amounts of revenue for the federal government, creates millions of American jobs. I think we can, in fact, use the private sector and modern science to have a bold program in space."
Gingrich continued:
I never said it would be a government program, but I do believe a president who's visionary, a president who believes in America's greatness, a president who's willing to do...launch big projects and rally the American people to big ideas...you know, Eisenhower launched the interstate highway system. We all drive on it now. I suspect if I had proposed that, Mitt Romney would have said, "Oh, that's way too expensive. Let me study carefully two-lane highways."This is a perfect example of the difference in the two candidacies. He is a manager who will manage the decay. I am a leader who has a vision of a bold, exciting American future where we change Washington decisively. And there's a good reason the Washington establishment is afraid of me. I will, in fact, lead the American people to change Washington. Romney will, in fact, hang out with his establishment friends, managing the decay, and explaining to the rest of us why that's the best hope we have.

AP Exclusive: Vatican rewrites money launder law (AP)
VATICAN CITY ? The Vatican has rewritten its 2010 anti-money laundering law after European inspectors found that it didn't fully meet their tough standards to combat the financing of terrorism.
The new law, a copy of which was obtained Friday by The Associated Press, requires the Vatican to create a list of terror organizations based on the one issued by the United Nations and requires the Vatican to enter into agreements with other countries to exchange financial information.
The Holy See has been working for years to comply with European Union norms on money-laundering and terror financing in a bid to shed its image as a secrecy-obsessed tax haven and join the so-called "white list" of countries that share tax information to crack down on tax cheats.

Last week, we thought that Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino did the dip for good, leaving the house with two fallen roomies. But on tonight's episode of "Jersey Shore,' we find out that Mike came back (and is a sensitive Cancer). Guess Danny won't need to bring any new roommates after all!

Danny, the Shore Store boss and house owner, gave everyone a surprise visit and kinda scolded the group for not putting in enough effort at work. Also, the deal was to have eight people under his roof and working for him ... there are no longer eight people in the house. New roommates?! Possibly. But Snooki warned whoever enters their "family" will get kicked by her (and with that, welcome!).
A "Help Wanted" sign went up, and females started going in and asking about the job. This should be interesting.

Meanwhile, all the girls in the house were secretly setting up a man-friendly soiree for Pauly D and Mike at Karma. Once it was the big night, these two birthday boys were beyond surprised. They were both handcuffed into wheelchairs as two huge cakes came rolling out and -- bam! -- two (cute!) female strippers pop out. Mike hits it off with the blond one, while Pauly finds a random brunette that he wanted to get in his birthday suit with.
The house had called up Vinny earlier in the day, and he broke the news that he wasn't going to show up to his boyfriends' birthday surprise. Later that night after getting back to the house, Ron and Deena tried calling Vin again, but it went to voicemail. And that led them to getting teary and missing their friend.

The next night was couples night. All the roomies and their significant others (Pauly went solo, Deena took one of Ron's friends, Mike took Paula) rolled over to Bamboo. Oh, except Snooki and Jionni -- they smushed and then slept.

Anyway, upon minutes of arriving to the club, a girl fight broke out, and you wouldn't believe who was involved.... No, not JWoww (shocking, we know), but Sammi! Apparently, some random girl pulled on her "new weave" so Sam threw her drink and before you knew it, they were goin' at it on the floor. "I was always taught to, like, self defend myself," she explained. You get what she meant.
Deena got into a fight, too -- with an alarm clock. It kept beeping every time she was trying "to do sex." What a you-know-what-block!

Then it was Operation GTGVB: Gym, tan, get Vinny back. Everyone in the house got together, made some custom "Vinny" shirts and went to Staten Island in hopes of kidnapping their friend and bringing him back.
After ambushing the house, everyone found Vinny in his room and smiles were all over the place. Vin showed off his new tat on his chest that said, "Let Go, Let God" (and some new abs). Then, everyone went back to the Shore house. And when we say everyone, we mean everyone.
Vinny included.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) ? On the weekend before the pivotal Florida primary, Newt Gingrich vowed Saturday to stay in the race for the Republican presidential nomination until the national convention this summer even if he loses Tuesday's vote. Front-runner Mitt Romney poured on the criticism of his rival in television ads airing across the state.
Gingrich's pledge, followed several hours later by an endorsement from campaign dropout Herman Cain, raised the prospect of an extended struggle inside the party as Republicans work to defeat President Barack Obama in the fall. "You just had two national polls that show me ahead," he said. "Why don't you ask Gov. Romney what he will do if he loses" in Florida.
The former Massachusetts governor countered a few hours later while in Panama City. "I think we are going to win here, I sure hope so," he said.
As the two rivals made their appeals to Hispanic, Jewish and tea party voters, veterans of the armed forces and others, all known indicators pointed to a good day for Romney in the primary.
He and his allies held a 3-1 advantage in money spent on television advertising in the race's final days. Robust early vote and absentee ballot totals followed a pre-primary turnout operation by his campaign. Even the schedules the two men kept underscored the shape of the race ? moderate for Romney, heavy for Gingrich.
Campaigning like a front-runner, Romney made few references to Gingrich. Instead, he criticized Obama's plans to cut the size of the armed forces. "He's detached from reality," the former Massachusetts governor said.
"The foreign policy of 'pretty please' is not working terribly well," he added. Romney said he wants to add 100,000 troops, not cut them.
If his personal rhetoric was directed Obama's way, the television commercials were trained on Gingrich, whose victory in last Saturday's South Carolina primary upended the race for the nomination. A new ad released as the weekend began is devoted to the day in 1997 when Gingrich received an ethics reprimand from the House while serving as speaker and was ordered to pay a $300,000 fine.
Nearly the entire 30-second ad consists of NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw's nationally broadcast description of the events on the evening news. "By an overwhelming vote, they found him guilty of ethics violations; they charged him a very large financial penalty, and they raised ? several of them ? raised serious questions about his future effectiveness," Brokaw said that night, and now again on televisions across Florida.
Both NBC and the former newsman registered objections. The network called on the campaign to stop using the footage and Brokaw said in a statement, "I do not want my role as a journalist compromised for political gain by any campaign."
A Romney adviser, Eric Fehrnstrom, said the campaign wasn't likely to stop running the ad. "We believe it falls within fair use," he said. "We didn't take the entire broadcast; we just took the first 30 seconds."
Whatever its impact, the ad represented part of a barrage that Gingrich could not match.
A second Romney ad said Gingrich had "cashed in" as a Washington insider while the housing crisis was hitting Florida particularly hard.
Figures made available to The Associated Press showed Romney was spending $2.8 million to air television commercials in the final week of the Florida campaign. In addition, a group supporting him, Restore Our Future, was spending $4 million more, for a combined total of $6.8 million.
By contrast, Gingrich was spending about $700,000, and Winning Our Future, a group backing him, an additional $1.5 million. That was about one-third the amount for the pro-Romney tandem.
Officials said the total of absentee and early vote cast approached 500,000, about 200,000 of them before Gingrich won in South Carolina last weekend.
Cain's endorsement came at a GOP dinner in West Palm Beach. The business executive led briefly in the polls last fall, then cratered and dropped out of the race after he was accused of sexual harassment and marital infidelity.
In supporting the former speaker, he followed an example set by Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who bestowed his endorsement a few days before the South Carolina primary.
Gingrich seemed in good humor during the day, despite the obstacles in his way. He joked with reporters that they had missed an example of his grandiosity ? a charge that one rival, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, had used in a recent debate ? when they didn't see him hold a golf trophy on display at the PGA Library.
Gingrich also turned aside one opportunity to criticize Romney, answering a question by saying, 'I want to talk about defeating Obama."
But his tone seemed to change after he said he wasn't happy with his performances in a pair of debates during the week, and was asked to explain.
"You cannot debate somebody who is dishonest. You just can't," he said, referring to Romney.
Referring to one answer the former Massachusetts governor had given, Gingrich said it was not true that Romney had always voted for a Republican when one was on the ballot.
"That in fact he could have voted for George H.W. Bush or Pat Buchanan the same day and he chose the Democratic primary, he voted Paul Tsongas, the most liberal candidate. The same year he gave money to three Democrats for Congress," he added, referring to the 1992 campaign.
"Now there's no practical way in a civil debate to deal with somebody who is that willing to say something that is just totally dishonest."
Romney poked fun at Gingrich's debate performances.
"This last one Speaker Gingrich said he didn't do so well because the audience was so loud. The one before he said he didn't do so well because the audience was too quiet. This is like Goldilocks, you know, you've got to have it just right.
"When I debate the president, I'm not going to worry about the audience, I'm going to make sure that we take down Barack Obama and take back the White House."
The two other contenders, Santorum and Texas Rep. Ron Paul, have conceded Florida and did not campaign in the state during the day.

(Reuters) ? Pfizer's Inlyta drug for patients with advanced kidney cancer got the nod from U.S. regulators on Friday, boosting the company's plans to offset plunging Lipitor sales.
The Food and Drug Administration said the drug, known generically as axitinib, was effective at treating patients who did not respond to another drug for kidney cancer.
About 61,000 Americans were diagnosed with kidney cancer last year, and about one in five of them are expected to die from the disease, according to the American Cancer Society.
About 20 percent to 30 percent of these patients have advanced disease at the time of diagnosis, Pfizer said.
Inlyta, which inhibits certain receptors that can influence tumor growth and progression of cancer, is one of several new drugs Pfizer is banking on to help replace lost revenue from its cholesterol fighter, Lipitor. The world's top-selling drug began facing generic competition late last year.

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A suicide car bomber struck a Shiite funeral procession Friday, killing 33 people as suspected al-Qaida militants stepped up apparent efforts to provoke a counterattack by Shiite militias on Sunnis that could pave the way toward open sectarian warfare now that U.S. troops have left Iraq.
The powerful blast ? the second deadliest attack in Iraq this month ? set nearby stores and cars ablaze alongside scattered flesh and mutilated bodies. It shattered windows and damaged walls in the local hospital, wounding a nurse and four patients; Within minutes, the hospital was scrambling to treat scores of others.
"It was a huge explosion," said Salam Hussein, who was watching the funeral procession from his grocery store.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack in the predominantly Shiite neighborhood of Zafaraniyah in southwestern Baghdad. But the bombing resembled previous attacks by al-Qaida in Iraq.
Minutes after the explosion, gunmen opened fire at a checkpoint in Zafaraniyah, killing two police officers, according to police officials. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters.
More than 200 people have been killed in bombings and shootings since the U.S. military withdrew from Iraq on Dec. 18. Many of the dead have been Shiite pilgrims and Iraqi police and soldiers.
Al-Qaida and other Sunni extremist groups are thought to be exploiting sectarian tensions in the wake of Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's efforts to marginalize the Sunni minority and cement his own grip on power.
Al-Maliki's security forces have launched a widespread crackdown against Sunni politicians, detaining hundreds for alleged ties to the deposed Baath Party. Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi, a Sunni, fled to the safety of the Kurdish semiautonomous zone after he was charged with running death squads during the height of the war.
"The attacks are a reaction to political developments in Iraq," said Mustafa Alani, a Geneva-based analyst and an Iraq expert with the Gulf Research Center. "The Sunnis feel the Shiites are squeezing them out of the government, and militants see the sectarian tensions in politics as a golden opportunity to reactivate their terror campaign."
"The U.S. soldiers are gone, Sunni politicians are being marginalized and while most Sunnis will not support the militants at the expense of being part of the political process, the attackers know that most Sunnis won't condemn violent acts either," Alani said.
Hadi Jalo, a Baghdad-based political analyst said the attacks could be a provocation by Sunni militants, trying to draw government-backed Shiite militias back into a sectarian fight.
"Those behind these attacks know that there are a number of organized Shiite armed groups who can strike back in Sunni areas to renew the tit-for-tat killings," Jalo said.
Friday's car bomb killed 33 people, including eight policemen, according to police and officials at Zafaraniyah General Hospital. Sixty-five people were wounded, including 16 members of the security forces, they said.
Baghdad military spokesman Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi gave different figures in an interview with the U.S.-funded Al-Hurra television. He said 11 people were killed, including eight policemen who were protecting the funeral, and 45 were wounded. The Iraqi government often underplays the number of casualties in attacks.
The attack took place at 11 a.m., when about 500 mourners were walking through a market area carrying coffins of a real estate agent and his brother-in-law. They had been shot and killed the night before in their office in Yarmouk, a mostly Sunni district in the western part of the capital.
Al-Moussawi said the bomber detonated his explosives in the car when he reached the end of the funeral procession.
Zafaraniyah resident Talib Bashir said he was part of the procession but left early to take his child home. Then he heard the blast.
"The fire lasted for a long time," Bashir said, noting that cars, an ambulance and several stores were still engulfed in flames hours later.
The bombing came two days after an al-Qaida spokesman threatened more attacks on the Shiite-led government, saying that "our explosives are at the door" of the prime minister.
Abu Mohammed al-Adnani, speaking for al-Qaida's Islamic State of Iraq, told his followers not to be deceived by the number of the Iraqi government troops and their Shiite supporters, because "they are merely beetles and flies." The audio message was posted on the group's website.
The deadliest attack this month took place Jan. 14, when a bomb tore through a procession of Shiite pilgrims heading toward a largely Sunni town in southern Iraq. At least 53 people were killed.

Gingrich calls for moon base, space contests

COCOA, Florida (Reuters) - Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrich called on Wednesday for a base on the moon and an expanded federal purse for prize money to stimulate private-sector space projects.
"We want Americans to think boldly about the future," Gingrich said during a campaign rally in Florida, where he outlined a space policy initiative that would cut NASA's bureaucracy and expand on private-sector space programs championed by President Barack Obama.
"By the end of my second term, we will have the first permanent base on the moon and it will be American," Gingrich said.
"We will have commercial near-Earth activities that include science, tourism and manufacturing, because it is in our interest to acquire so much experience in space that we clearly have a capacity that the Chinese and the Russians will never come anywhere close to matching," he said.
Gingrich is locked in a close battle with former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney as Florida prepares to vote on Tuesday in the Republican presidential primary. Republicans are seeking a nominee to challenge Democrat Obama in the November election. The rally in Cocoa was just down the road from the Kennedy Space Center.
With the retirement of the space shuttles last year, the United States is dependent on Russia to fly its astronauts to the International Space Station, a service that costs NASA about $60 million per person. China, the only other country that has flown people in space, is not a member of the station partnership.
In addition to supporting the station, a $100 billion laboratory owned by the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan and Canada, NASA is working on a spaceship and heavy-lift rocket that could carry astronauts to asteroids and other destinations beyond the station's 240-mile-high (385-km) orbit.
The Obama administration also backs the development of privately owned space taxis to break Russia's monopoly on transportation to the station.
Congress allotted $406 million for the program for the year that began on October 1.
Gingrich said he wanted to spend 10 percent of NASA's $18 billion budget on prize money for competitions that spur innovation and technological breakthroughs in space.
"I'm prepared to invest the prestige of the presidency in communicating and building a nationwide movement in favor of space," Gingrich said at a meeting of aerospace executives and community leaders after the rally.
"If we do it right, it'll be wild and it will be just the most fun you've ever seen," he said.
During a debate in Florida on Monday, Romney said he believed space should be a priority.
"What we have right now is a president who does not have a vision or a mission for NASA. I happen to believe our space program is important not only for science, but also for commercial development and for military development," he said.

Scots ponder independence vote with 16-year-olds (AP)
LONDON ? Scotland's leader has presented his proposal for a ballot on independence ? and his ideas include letting 16- and 17-year-olds cast ballots in a vote that could see the breakup of Britain within four years.
First Minister Alex Salmond announced the Scottish government's preferred options for the vote on whether to sever ties from Britain, which it plans to hold in the fall of 2014. A "yes" vote would lead to independence taking effect with a May 2016 election for the Scottish Parliament.
Scotland and England united in 1707 to form Great Britain. Scotland gained significant autonomy after voting in 1997 to set up the Edinburgh-based Scottish Parliament, but some Scots want to go further and make the nation of 5 million people an independent country within the European Union.
Salmond told Scottish lawmakers in the Edinburgh assembly Wednesday that the ballot would ask "Do you agree that Scotland should be an independent country?"
But he said it could also include a third option, backing increased autonomy short of full independence.
And he said the voting age should be lowered from the current 18.
"If a 16-year-old in Scotland can register to join the army, get married and pay taxes, surely he or she should be able to have a say in this country's constitutional future?" Salmond said.
Scottish 16-year-olds can join the army ? though they cannot be sent into combat until they are 18 ? work full-time and marry without parental consent. The official Scottish drinking age outside the home is 18, but even that has some exceptions for 16- and 17-year-olds.
Salmond, who leads the separatist Scottish National Party, said independence would bring "a new, more modern relationship between the nations of these islands ? a partnership of equals."
The exact wording is subject to input from Scottish voters and negotiations with the British government in London, which insists it has the final authority to authorize a binding referendum.
British Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservative-led government has offered the Scottish administration the power to hold a vote on independence, but wants a say in the timing and could insist that the Electoral Commission, which will run the referendum, be allowed to set the question.
Salmond's proposed wording is likely to be seen by opponents as slanted in favor of independence.
Opponents of independence want to hold the vote as soon as possible, because polls suggest only about a third of Scots favor splitting from England.
Cameron has said the ballot should pose a straight yes-no question, and not include a third option, which has been dubbed maximum devolution. Salmond disagrees.
"If there is an alternative of maximum devolution which would command wide support in Scotland, then it is only fair and democratic that option should be among the choices open to the people of Scotland," Salmond said.
Cameron stressed Wednesday that everyone in Britain, not just Scots, should have a say in any changes to Scotland's status.
"The point that everyone needs to understand is that options for further devolution, options for changes across the United Kingdom, are matters all of the United Kingdom should rightly discuss," he said.
Michael Moore, Cameron's minister responsible for Scotland, was due to hold talks with Salmond on Friday but the meeting was postponed because Moore has chicken pox.
Salmond said an independent Scotland would keep Queen Elizabeth II as head of state but would not send troops to "illegal wars like Iraq, and we won't have nuclear weapons based on Scottish soil." Scotland is currently home to Britain's fleet of nuclear-armed submarines.
Scottish Labour leader Johann Lamont, whose party opposes independence, accused Salmon of belittling Scots who wished to remain in Britain.
"Why does he assert as fact that we all wish to be independent of each other when we all know, as families and communities, we want to come together in partnership and cooperation?" she said.

Spike Lee's 'Red Hook Summer' Screened At Sundance Offers A Nuanced Overview Of African American Christianity

PARK CITY, Utah (RNS) I have a confession to make.
The only real reason I saw Spike Lee's new film at the Sundance Film Festival here is because it is set in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn, where my oldest daughter started her career in an elementary school with Teach for America.
Even though I think and write about religion for a living, I didn't attend "Red Hook Summer" because the program guide describes it as the story of a "firebrand preacher bent on getting (his grandson) to accept Jesus Christ as his personal savior."
After all, why would anyone expect a nuanced, respectful exploration of the black church in America from Spike Lee? Let's face it, the words "Spike Lee" and "theologian" don't roll off the tongue very easily, if at all.
So imagine my surprise when "Red Hook Summer" delivered a humorous, honest look at the vibrancy, complexity, sincerity and messiness of African-American Christianity.
The story begins with Flik, a teenager who attends a private school in Atlanta and enjoys the finer things of life. His life is turned upside down when his mother sends him off to Brooklyn for the summer to stay with his preacher grandfather, Enoch.
Flik is certainly unprepared for life in the projects, but is even less prepared for working every day at his grandfather's Little Piece of Heaven church. The only upside is meeting Chazz, a sassy teen who has learned to negotiate life on the streets of Red Hook with her life in the church.
She's a believer but not stuffy about it, and helps Flik get through the Sunday worship service, which is punctuated by Enoch's theatrical rants, the spirited "Amens!" of the congregation and the melodramatic sounds of the Hammond organ.
The heart of this film is grandpa Enoch. As the story begins we get hints that Enoch is a man with a past, and it reaches its dramatic climax when we realize that though Enoch is done with his past, his past is not done with him.
Clarke Peters (Det. Lester Freamon from "The Wire") in the role of Enoch delivers a textured, multi-layered performance that does for the role of a black pastor what Robert Duvall did for revivalists in "The Apostle." These characters are believable, complicated and likable.
At the Q&A following the film, it was obvious that I wasn't the only one surprised that Lee delivered a thoughtful, respectful and savvy film about religion. The first audience question was about Lee's personal religious background. He never attended church as a boy in Brooklyn, he explained, although some summers he was sent to stay with relatives in Atlanta who made sure he did.
Suffice it to say that church and religion have not played a central role in Lee's life.
So what is the source of the film's religious content? To answer that question, Lee introduced his co-author on the script, James McBride, and the richness of the film immediately made complete sense.
I interviewed McBride in Chicago in the 1990's about his best-selling book "The Color of Water." It was an autobiographical account of his Jewish mother who converted to Christianity and, with her husband, founded the church where "Red Hook Summer" was filmed.
McBride talked about his belief in God and Jesus, and said his faith was renewed and strengthened during the writing and making of the film. He also talked about spirited debates with Lee about certain scenes where McBride's desire to respect religion collided with Lee's determination to keep it gritty and real. It was a productive tension, and it worked.
I still find it fascinating that Lee would make a film about religion, and that he teamed up with McBride to do it. Sundance is all about telling stories, and "Red Hook Summer" tells a center-stage story about the importance of religion.

With the arrival of snow, snow and more snow here in Chicago I find myself daydreaming about sweet potatoes with honey and pecans coated in sugar and splashed with bourbon; it's the perfect time of year for baking.?
My reintroduction into baking began with a pie pumpkin. One crisp fall afternoon my boyfriend Aaron and I peered into our CSA box and discovered that Shelly and Irv had decided to give us the tiniest of pumpkins. We had no inkling it would be the beginning of everything. We simply knew that we had been gifted an adorable pumpkin that came with a recipe for pie; and we both loved pie. We decided to give it a shot, and on a rather chilly Sunday we started our first pie.
Having learned the art of pie baking from my mum, I tackled the crust while Aaron mixed together delightful amounts of honey and roasted pumpkin, cinnamon and heavy whipping cream until it was time to bake. The whole evening was permeated with the feeling of being home. Munching on baked pumpkin seeds, the kitchen filling with warmth and the big broadcast playing its timeless and helplessly romantic songs on the radio, Aaron and I waited for the pie in the oven to turn golden brown.
It became a tradition. Sunday nights we filled our apartment with quintessential fall smells and music that demanded we dance to it in our stocking feet. The oven kept our tiny kitchen toasty all throughout the blustery Chicago winter and the week following would fly by because mornings were filled with coffee and breakfast pie. We had friends who gladly trooped through the winter snow to share in slices of bourbon pecan and apple pie. Who brought with them good conversation and more often than not whiskey and apple cider. We passed the winter with apples, pumpkins, sweet potatoes and a fairly consistent sugar high and I met the spring with the vague idea of a lady bakership floating around my head.
In September I began what I'm fondly referring to as my "tour of pie." The idea is that I'll travel all over the United States and apprentice at a slew of different pie shops and bakeries in order to learn as much as I can. I'm educating myself in all things pie, and blogging about my journey toward becoming a lady pie baker.
My first stop on the tour was High 5 Pie in Seattle. Having never been to Seattle before I was a bundle of nerves and anticipation. However, I had no reason to worry. The owner, Dani Cone, and lead baker Anna Bicknell were perfectly happy to host and rather enthralled with the idea of a touring apprentice. Over the course of three weeks I learned how to make fillings by the pound rather than by each individual pie. I helped bake the wholesale pies, packaged them and got them ready for delivery and of course there was always crust to be rolled out. Every day at the kitchen felt like a collaboration. If we weren't making the actual fillings we were talking about them, bouncing ideas off of each other and essentially letting the excitement of baking pie permeate our lives.
So, onward and upward and all things pie. I'm perfecting crusts and crumbles and everything in between and someday... well, who knows... let's just say I'm taking this adventure one pie at a time.

Gingrich's South Carolina Win, Through the Lens of a GOP Voter (ContributorNetwork)
COMMENTARY | LEXINGTON, S.C. -- For voters who weathered the wind and rain of afternoon thunderstorms, South Carolinians delivered a surprising victory on Saturday to Newt Gingrich.
A surprise indeed, to this Palmetto State resident. And in true Carolina fashion, residents of the "First in The South" primary election, have sent a clear message to the White House. Now whether that message means a Republican victory this November, or a groundhog type shadow that forecasts another four years of an Obama winter will remain to be seen, despite South Carolina's claim of "electing presidents."
Perhaps the most astonishing element of Newt Gingrich's victory, is the propelling momentum brought into this election by opponent, and poll front runner, Mitt Romney. Although not a supporter, I was assured of a Romney victory going into this Primary, based solely on Romney's conservatism and religious views which I thought were on par with the political views of this State. Even with public endorsements by both former candidate Jon Huntsman, and South Carolina's Gov. Nikki Haley, Romney failed to sway voters as he did in Iowa and New Hampshire. Haley even referred to Romney, on her Facebook profile, as a "Jobs President," who will be "a great partner to South Carolina."
With so many polling stations throughout the state reporting light voter turnout, I feel that the South Carolina GOP has only tarnished this election by moving the primary forward several months, to an uncommon Saturday polling. And in doing so, the South Carolina GOP has produced a candidate I will not support later this year.
Why? Because a Gingrich win, in November, would show a weakness within America. I believe Gingrich's past marital problems, the 1998 ethics violations, and reprimands sanctioned to him by our own Congress, render a candidate who would serve only to insult America on the world front.
The Obama administration promised "changes" four years ago, which have been delivered as promised, much to the chagrin of this nation. And now, South Carolinians have responded by voting for someone at the opposite end of the spectrum. Someone who's reputation reminds me fully of a former president.
I say to Florida and the remainder of the country, choose your candidate carefully. A vote for one of the other candidates may seem uncomfortable at first, as it did for this previously undecided voter, but when examined as many facts as I could stand, I arrived at one conclusion. All the candidates have made embellished campaign promises, but there are only two I believe can deliver the results American need to recover from a cold Obama winter. We may not fully trust any of the GOP candidates, but a choice must be made. Either way we are stuck between a rock and a hard place. This country needs another "change" in the White House. Now, do we really want to put another George W Bush back in the Oval office? The people of South Carolina have spoken.
