Secretary of Agriculture Vilsack visits Montgomery County UT ...

?

Facility has received several USDA grants, created jobs and trained hundreds

UT Extension OfficeClarksville, TN ? It?s not just pie in the sky. A commercially equipped kitchen in Montgomery County is using baked goods to help small and emerging rural businesses grow and create jobs and income.

Operated jointly by University of Tennessee Extension and Tennessee State University Extension, the kitchen has benefited from several USDA grants, and on Friday, Oct. 19, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack visited the facility and checked out some of the products created by local culinary entrepreneurs. Vilsack stopped by following a roundtable discussion with Tennessee producers to discuss the resiliency and productivity of American agriculture and the importance of passing comprehensive food, farm and jobs legislation.

Along with Martha Pile, UT Extension family and consumer sciences agent and manager of the kitchen, seven users of the kitchen were on hand during the Secretary?s visit. Secretary Vilsack commented on how the kitchen was contributing to the local food movement and how it assisted local businesses. ?These entrepreneurs have a dream and a product that?s important to them. Several of them had lost employment opportunities and they use it as an opportunity to become their own boss. The kitchen gives them the capacity and ability to get started,? he said. ?It?s exciting to see what the university is doing and how much help they?re providing.?

Two entrepreneurs were actually using the kitchen during the visit: Jean Bragg of Jean?s Breadbasket & More, and Tiffany Abbott, owner of Any Sweet Reason. Bragg was baking her signature pumpkin bread and Abbott was decorating a batch of fresh peach cobbler cupcakes.

Bragg?s recipe for pumpkin bread is more than 100 years old, but her business is just getting started. She?s been using the kitchen for about two months. ?If it hadn?t been for the domestic kitchen and UT Extension, I would never have been able to start this business. I didn?t have the financial backing to get started, but I met Martha through a friend, and was able to use the equipment to get going,? she said.

Any Sweet Reason has been in business for two years and owner Tiffany Abbott, a veteran and now a military spouse, sells her creations at the local farmers market. She makes all sorts of cookies and confections and caters parties. ?I have two dogs that are my baby boys, and there?s no way I could get rid of them to produce in my house. So luckily Ms. Pile told me about the kitchen, and I immediately took advantage of it,? she said. ?I certainly hope to expand the business. It?s fun and I really enjoy it.?

Other successful entrepreneurs who have utilized the kitchen include pie makers Papa C Pies operated by Gary and Chad Collier of Franklin and Old Fashioned Fried Pies operated by Jenny Chandler and Brenda Presson of Ashland City. Pappas? Peppers, which bottles pepper oils for cooking and baking and Natural Choices Botanica, which packages and sells legacy tea blends, have also started successful businesses in the Montgomery County kitchen.

The kitchen is part of Extension?s Sustainable Tennessee program. Sustainable Tennessee is intended to help citizens create local income through the expansion of entrepreneurial skills. In the case of the Montgomery County Extension Commercial Kitchen, the goal is to enhance marketable culinary skills. Pile says the kitchen is open to anyone who completes food safety training. ?Once an entrepreneur completes food safety training, he or she is allowed access to the kitchen to create custom culinary products packaged for resale to the public.?

Eighteen entrepreneurs have used the kitchen, and two of them have been so successful that they now operate their own commercial kitchens. Pile says an additional 12 entrepreneurs are currently undergoing food safety training or have recently received certification to use the kitchen. She estimates the current income generated by participants collectively values more than $200,000 annually.

The kitchen has been in operation approximately nine years and was outfitted with funding from Montgomery County government and USDA SARE and Rural Development grants. Pile says it?s a shining example of wise use of existing resources. ?When county Extension personnel were compelled to occupy an old school building after a tornado destroyed our office space, we recognized the value of the school cafeteria?s existing stainless steel sinks and countertops. We were able to outfit the kitchen for commercial use through grant opportunities,? she said.

On hand to greet Secretary Vilsack were Dr. Tim Cross, dean of UT Extension, and Dr. Shirley Hastings, associate dean and head of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. Both were more than pleased to have Secretary Vilsack experience the fruits of USDA?s investments.

?Our Extension educational programs are funded through a partnership with USDA, the State of Tennessee, and our county governments. This visit by Secretary Vilsack is great evidence of USDA?s commitment to serving Tennesseans through research-based information delivered by our Extension agents and specialists. We?re very pleased that Secretary Vilsack has taken the time to see first-hand how our education helps food-based entrepreneurs develop their products and grow their businesses,? said Cross.

The kitchen has also been used for food safety training for more than 165 people on the use of commercial equipment and regulations for starting your own food-processing business. An additional 230 people (youth and adults) have participated in safe food preparation and preservation classes (canning and drying) held at the facility. Hastings notes that the training ongoing at the facility combined with the commercial uses makes the kitchen a valuable asset to the county and region. ?It?s an example of Extension?s efforts to increase the quality of life and economic viability of rural communities,? she said.

Pile says kitchen users often participate in regional ?Gatherings,? which are community-based groups of entrepreneurs helping each other succeed in business. Extension organized the Gatherings as well as a local Winter Market, which operates after the local farmers markets close for the season. Karla Kean, TSU Extension agent in Montgomery County is among the regional organizers of the Gathering and the Winter Market.

UT Extension provides a gateway to the University of Tennessee as the outreach unit of the Institute of Agriculture. With an office in every Tennessee county, UT Extension delivers educational programs and research-based information to citizens throughout the state. In cooperation with Tennessee State University, UT Extension works with farmers, families, youth and communities to improve lives by addressing problems and issues at the local, state and national levels.

James Boxall, Recipient of the 2012 Literacy Award : The LibVine

The Royal Canadian Geographic Society (RCGS) has announced it is presenting the 2012 Literacy Award to the director of the GISciences Centre, James Boxall.

James Boxall, director of the GISciences Centre, located in the Killam Library.

The award will be given at the RCGS fellows dinner on November 7 in Ottawa. The award includes $5,000; half of which is donated to a charity of choice. James has expressed a desire to create a foundation to support K-12 teachers who wish to train in using geographic information systems (GIS) with their students.

James is the recipient of this award due to his work over the last 25 years to support and enhance geographic and spatial education at all levels. From 1991 to 1993, James was the original proponent in developing the Canadian Council for Geographic Education and has been actively working with not only our own Dalhousie community, in geography and GIS courses and through the development of the GISciences Centre, but also in the K-12 sector with teachers and schools wanting to develop skills in spatial learning.

When asked about the connection of this to Dalhousie and the Dal Libraries, James remarked, ?Those who know the history of geography at Dalhousie know that much of the work that happened outside of our community ended up playing a role in moving things along on campus. Also, it makes sense because with the work we do in teaching and research, you simply have to look back at the foundation of the discipline?in 200BCE the chief librarian of the Great Library of Alexandria, Eratosthenes, founded the field of geography, developed latitude and longitude, and accurately measured the circumference of the Earth. We are simply trying to keep up with that tradition of geography librarians enhancing spatial learning.?

Congratulations on this honour James, from everyone at the Dalhousie Libraries.

Wozniacki to play Stosur for Kremlin Cup title

MOSCOW (AP) ? Caroline Wozniacki and Samantha Stosur both earned three-set victories on Saturday to reach the final of the Kremlin Cup.

Wozniacki advanced to her third final of the season by beating Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-4, while Stosur rallied past former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Stosur has a 3-2 record against Wozniacki, winning their last two matches.

In a match with 18 breaks of serve, the third-seeded Wozniacki won five consecutive games against Arvidsson to take the first set. Both players then struggled with their serves for the rest of the match.

The 11th-ranked Dane was serving for the match at 6-5 in the second set but was broken. Wozniacki was broken again while serving for the match at 5-3 in the third but finally clinched the victory when the 46th-ranked Swede netted a backhand in the 10th game.

"I was really fighting out there," Wozniacki said. "It's tough on this surface to finish off the point. This surface suits her game much more than mine and she could get lots of balls. Besides, she was playing really good this week. I'm just happy to make it to the final."

Ivanovic won four consecutive games in the first set but Stosur broke in the eighth game of the second to stay in the match. She then made a decisive break in the seventh game of the decider and sealed the victory on her first match point with a backhand down the line.

"In the first set Ana was playing quite well making good first shots in the rally, which forced me to play in defense." Stosur said. "But in the second set I started serving a lot better and played much more accurate on return. I improved my movement and started playing more offensively and with that I managed to reverse and win the match."

Ivanovic took a medical time out at 3-2 down in the third set to have her right hip treated and bandaged. She said she first felt pain in her hip at 2-1 in the second set and "it got gradually worse and it's still sore walking."

"It's really disappointing, but it was quite a good match," Ivanovic said "I was still trying to come in and I just did two more errors here and there. I thought I still had chances in the second set. But she played well and it was a high-quality match."

Later Saturday in the men's semifinals, Malek Jaziri was scheduled to play second-seeded Andreas Seppi of Italy, while Croatian veteran Ivo Karlovic was to play fourth-seeded Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci.

Obama tells Stewart about debate 'off night'

By Craig Berman, NBC News contributor

Comedy Central

President Barack Obama and Jon Stewart.

After weeks of listening to Jon Stewart cheer, cajole, criticize, and generally fuss over the state of his campaign, President Barack Obama showed up to ?The Daily Show? on Thursday and got the chance to speak for himself in person rather than through cable news soundbites.

The president and Stewart talked about issues domestic and foreign, with jokes mixed into the generally serious conversation. But Stewart started by asking what he?s asked on the air since the day it happened ... what went wrong for Obama during that first debate?

?Sometimes I?ll go onstage and have an open-faced turkey sandwich and a shot of NyQuil, and halfway through I?ll look up and say 'Are we on?'" Stewart said, offering his own excuse for the occasional sub-par night.

But Obama wasn?t blaming his diet or big pharma.

?Obviously I had an off night. The presentation wasn?t what it needed to be,? he said. ?But the issues haven?t changed -- the stakes of this election are really big. Governor Romney makes a good presentation, but the fundamentals of what he?s calling for are the same policies that got us into this mess, that we've been fighting against for the past four years, trying to dig our way out of.?

Obama stressed the accomplishments of his first term, such as ending the war in Iraq, health care reform, bailing out the auto industry, and aggressively fighting al-Qaeda. He placed some of the blame on the Republicans for not being able to do more.

?We could be growing even faster than we have if Governor Romney?s allies in Congress would move on some of the things we?ve recommended.?

?We ended the war in Iraq. We?re ending the war in Afghanistan. We?ve gone after al-Qaeda and its leadership. It?s true that al-Qaeda is still active, at least sort of remnants of it are staging in other parts of North Africa and the Middle East. Sometimes you?ve got to make some tough calls, but you can do so in a way that?s consistent with international law and with American law,? Obama said.

Stewart also asked about the recent attack in Libya that killed the American ambassador, and Romney?s assertion that the White House came back with a confusing response.

?We weren?t confused about the fact that four Americans had been killed. I wasn?t confused about the fact that we needed to ramp up diplomatic security around the world right after it happened. I wasn?t confused about the fact that we had to investigate exactly what happened so it gets fixed. And I wasn?t confused about the fact that we?re going to hunt down whoever did it and bring them to justice,? Obama said.

?What I have always tried to do is make sure we get all the facts, figure out what went wrong, and make sure it doesn?t happen again. We?re still in that process now. Every piece of information that we get, as we got it we laid it out to the American people. The picture eventually gets fully filled in and we know exactly what happened, and then we know how to make sure we prevent it in the future,? he added.

Not surprisingly, the President treated the interview like a stump speech, and he closed with a plea for people to go to the polls.

"Here?s what I?ll say to everybody who?s watching -- the stakes on this could not be bigger. War, peace, the Supreme Court, a woman?s right to choose, whether we?re creating jobs in this country or whether they?re getting shipped overseas, whether our kids are getting the best education they can. All that stuff is at stake. There is no excuse not to vote.

Of course, there was some humor mixed in with the political discourse.

Stewart expressed concerns about the president?s plan to ask the rich to pay more taxes to help lower the deficit.

?Wait, this is the first I?m hearing about this. What is this about billionaires? What are you doing to us?? Stewart said. Clearly, being the host of ?The Daily Show? pays well.

For his final question, Stewart noted that the interview had taken somewhere around 14 minutes. How many e-mails, Stewart asked, had the Obama campaign sent him during that time?

?It depends on whether you?ve maxed out,? Obama said.

Come on, Jon! If you?re a billionaire, what are a few thousand bucks among friends?

In this image provided by NASA the Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX, Falcon 9 rocket with it's Dragon capsule attached on top is seen at Space Launch Complex-40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida Oct. 2, 2012. The coming mission is the first under a $1.6 billion contract with NASA that calls for a dozen resupply flights by SpaceX, essential in the post-shuttle era. The liftoff is planned for Sunday morning, Oct. 7, at 8:35 p.m. EDT. (AP Photo/NASA)

(AP) ? A commercial cargo ship rocketed into orbit Sunday in pursuit of the International Space Station, the first of a dozen supply runs under a mega-contract with NASA.

It was the second launch of a Dragon capsule to the orbiting lab by the California-based SpaceX company. The first was last spring.

This time was no test flight, however, and the spacecraft carried 1,000 pounds of key science experiments and other precious gear on this truly operational mission. There was also a personal touch: chocolate-vanilla swirl ice cream tucked in a freezer for the three station residents.

The company's unmanned Falcon rocket roared into the night sky right on time, putting SpaceX on track to reach the space station Wednesday. The complex was soaring southwest of Tasmania when the Falcon took flight.

Officials declared the launch a success, despite a problem with one of the nine first-stage engines. The rocket put Dragon in its intended orbit, said the billionaire founder and chief executive officer of SpaceX, Elon Musk.

"It's driving its way to station, so that's just awesome," noted SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell.

In more good news, a piece of space junk was no longer threatening the station, and NASA could focus entirely on the delivery mission.

NASA is counting on private business to restock the space station, now that the shuttles have retired to museums. The space agency has a $1.6 billion contract with SpaceX for 12 resupply missions.

Especially exciting for NASA is the fact that the Dragon will return twice as much cargo as it took up, including a stockpile of astronauts' blood and urine samples. The samples ? nearly 500 of them ? have been stashed in freezers since Atlantis made the last shuttle flight in July 2011.

The Dragon will spend close to three weeks at the space station before being released and parachuting into the Pacific at the end of October. By then, the space station should be back up to a full crew of six.

None of the Russian, European or Japanese cargo ships can bring anything back; they're destroyed during re-entry. The Russian Soyuz crew capsules have limited room for anything besides people.

Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX ? owned by PayPal co-founder Musk ? is working to convert its unmanned Dragon capsules into vessels that could carry astronauts to the space station in three years. Other U.S. companies also are vying to carry crews. Americans must ride Russian rockets to orbit in the meantime, for a steep price.

Musk, who monitored the launch from SpaceX Mission Control in Hawthorne, Calif., called the capsules Dragon after the magical Puff to get back at critics who, a decade ago, considered his effort a fantasy. The name Falcon comes from the Millennium Falcon starship of "Star Wars" fame.

An estimated 2,400 guests jammed the launching center to see the Falcon, with its Dragon, come to life for SpaceX's first official, operational supply mission.

Across the country at SpaceX headquarters, about 1,000 employees watched via TV and webcast.

It was no apparition.

"Just over a year after the retirement of the space shuttle, we have returned space station cargo resupply missions to U.S. soil," said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden Jr.

SpaceX is shooting for its next supply run in January.

Another company looking to haul space station cargo, Virginia's Orbital Sciences Corp., hopes to launch a solo test flight in December and a demo mission to the station early next year.

Every time SpaceX or a competitor flies successfully, Bolden told reporters, "that gives the nonbelievers one more opportunity to get on board and root for us" and help enable commercial launches for space station astronauts. This will further free NASA up to aim for points beyond low-Earth orbit, like Mars.

"This was a big night," Bolden concluded.

Abortion rights yacht sails around Moroccan port

Women's rights activists sail a small boat around a yacht harbor in Smir, northern Morocco on Thursday Oct 4 2012 to raise awareness about safe abortions, despite officials? efforts to seal the port and anti-abortion protests on land. Organizers had initially said a large ship offering abortion information and services was on its way from the Netherlands on Thursday. In response, police sealed the port for what it called ?military maneuvers? and denied journalists access. But in the afternoon, organizers admitted that they already had stationed a sailboat in the port several days ago, fearing that authorities would close the port. And that sailboat took off around the harbor bearing banners. Meanwhile, on land, about 200 protesters targeted the activists from "Women on Waves," the Dutch organization behind the boat. (AP) ? Women's rights activists sailed a small yacht around a harbor Thursday in northern Morocco to raise awareness about abortion, despite officials' attempts to seal the port and anti-abortion protests on land against the group.

The small sailboat was in sharp contrast to earlier reports from the Dutch group Women on Waves, who had claimed that a large ship offering abortion information and services was on its way Thursday from the Netherlands.

The trip in the harbor of the Mediterranean coastal town of Smir was the abortion rights group's first event in a Muslim country.

Abortion in Morocco is illegal except in rare cases where the mother's life is threatened and it is also illegal to give out information about it. Moroccan officials had said the boat would not be allowed in and police sealed the port for what they called "military maneuvers," denying journalists access.

But in the afternoon, activists from Women on Waves said they already had stationed a sailboat in the harbor several days ago, fearing the port would be shut down. And that boat took off around the harbor with banners advertising an information hotline for abortion.

Police later boarded the Dutch-flagged yacht and escorted it out of the marina.

"We launched a hotline that gives information to women here in Morocco, because the ship can never solve the problem here for everyone," said Rebecca Gomperts, the organization's founder.

The group's hotline contains a recorded message explaining which easily available medication in Morocco can be used to perform an abortion.

Some 200 protesters in Smir targeted the activists outside the sealed gates of the marina. The protesters, some in conservative Muslim robes and headscarves, carried pictures of bloody embryos and shouted "Terrorist!" and "Assassin!" at Gomperts, who was attempting to hand out fliers on abortion in Arabic and French.

"We are here because we cannot accept these values, the values of massacre," said protester Abdessamad Zilali, 23. "It is not part of our tradition to kill the unborn."

As shouting protesters tried to get closer to Gomperts, police pushed them back and she was escorted away for her own protection.

The Women on Waves boat was invited to Morocco by a local women's rights organization seeking the legalization of abortion in this North African kingdom.

The Moroccan government says the boat did not have permission to come.

Founded in 1999, Women on Waves aims to spread information about safe medical abortions through medication and has previously angered authorities in conservative Catholic countries.

The group has carried out campaigns in Ireland, Poland and Spain, and was banned from entering Portugal's waters in 2004.

Study confirms link between indoor tanning and skin cancer risk

Wednesday, October 3, 2012

Indoor tanning increases the risks of developing non-melanoma skin cancer (known as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma), particularly among those exposed before the age of 25, finds a study published on bmj.com today.

It follows a BMJ study published in July that showed 3,438 (5.4%) new cases of melanoma diagnosed each year in Western Europe are related to sunbed use, particularly among young adults.

Some experts are now calling for Europe to follow the example of the United States by introducing a "tan tax" on indoor tanning salons.

The researchers, led by Professor Eleni Linos at the University of California San Francisco, estimate that indoor tanning may account for over 170,000 cases of non-melanoma skin cancer in the US alone.

Cases of non-melanoma skin cancer have increased dramatically over the last few decades. Although not as lethal as melanoma, they affect a vast number of people worldwide and are a substantial financial burden to healthcare systems. Several studies have examined the link between non-melanoma skin cancer and indoor tanning, but have yielded varied results.

So Professor Linos and her team set out to review the evidence. They analysed the results of 12 studies involving 9,328 cases of non-melanoma skin cancer (7,645 basal cell carcinomas and 1,683 squamous cell carcinomas).

Ever using indoor tanning was associated with a 67% higher risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma and a 29% higher risk of developing basal cell carcinoma, compared with never using it. Given the extent of indoor tanning use in the United States, the researchers estimated that such tanning accounts for 3.7% of cases of basal cell carcinoma and 8.2% of cases of squamous cell carcinoma. This corresponds to 98,408 cases of basal cell carcinoma and 72,244 cases of squamous cell carcinoma, making 170,652 cases of non-melanoma skin cancer each year attributable to indoor tanning.

Exposure at a young age (before 25 years) was significantly associated with an increased risk for basal cell carcinoma and showed a non-significant increased risk for squamous cell carcinoma. "This suggests a critical period for exposure during early life and a potential dose-response effect," say the authors.

Further analysis of the data, and adjustment for factors that may have affected the results, did not substantially alter the findings.

The authors say their findings point to a possible causal link between indoor tanning and non-melanoma skin cancers and they estimate that indoor tanning "may account for hundreds of thousands of new cases each year in the United States alone."

They conclude: "We hope that these findings can support public health campaigns and motivate increased regulation to reduce exposure to this carcinogen, especially during early life."

In an accompanying editorial, experts from the Queensland Institute of Medical Research in Australia say these two new reviews "provide more convincing evidence that exposure to artificial ultraviolet radiation is a cause of the three main skin cancers."

They say that regulations on the sunbed industry "must be tethered to warnings by health professionals and educators about the risks of indoor tanning" and suggest that "young people in particular should be made aware that the use of sunbeds for short term cosmetic tanning carries the long term price of an increased risk of skin cancer."

"The EU needs to follow the example of the United States by introducing a so called tan tax on indoor tanning services," says Simon Williams from Northwestern University in Chicago in a personal view article. He estimates that, in the UK, a 10% excise duty on indoor tanning could raise revenues of between ?95m and ?113m over a decade.

Although he argues that a 10% tax "is likely inadequate from a public health perspective" he believes it is "essential as a starting point for future tax increases, and as a means of acknowledging that indoor tanning, like tobacco, is a primary tier carcinogen that warrants its own sin tax."

Facebook Testing Promoted Posts In US - Business Insider

Facebook is doing everything it can to come up with new sources of revenues.

Now it's turning to its massive base of users with a new product, Promoted Posts, that it's introducing to the United States.

The feature lets you pay to mark a post as "Sponsored" and have it appear prominently in your friends' News Feeds.

Businesses have been able to buy such ads for a while. And ordinary users have always had the option to buy display ads that appear on the right-hand rail of Facebook's website?sometimes using Facebook's targeting to comic effect by targeting coworkers, journalists, or employers. (For a while, "Hire Me" Facebook ads were a thing.)

But ads in the News Feed are generally thought to be the most likely to be noticed, since that's the area of the site where most Facebook users focus their attention.

One thing's for sure: Once Facebook users start noticing these ads, there's almost certainly going to be a ruckus as we sort out the etiquette of advertising aspects of our life to our friends.

Will people start running ads for yard sales on Facebook, as TechCrunch's Josh Constine suggests? (Facebook would like that, since it's eager to see more commerce happening on the site.)

(AP) ? Offering deficit-cutting ideas before his first debate with President Barack Obama, Mitt Romney says he might be willing to reduce income tax deductions used by millions of families for home mortgage interest and health care costs

He suggested the changes could be part of a plan that includes a 20 percent cut in tax rates across the board, continuation of upper income tax cuts that Obama wants to end and a comprehensive tax overhaul plan that the Republican presidential contender has so far declined to flesh out in detail. Romney says his overall plans would invigorate the slowly recovering U.S. economy.

Both Romney and Obama spent their time mostly in private on Tuesday, preparing for the debate, the president in Henderson, Nev., near Las Vegas, Romney already in Denver where the faceoff will take place Wednesday at 9 p.m. EDT. Neither held public campaign events, but Obama took a break from preparation to visit nearby Hoover Dam, and Romney picked up lunch at a Chipotle Mexican Grill near his hotel.

In an interview Monday night with Denver TV station KDVR, Romney said, "As an option you could say everybody's going to get up to a $17,000 deduction. And you could use your charitable deduction, your home mortgage deduction, or others ? your health care deduction, and you can fill that bucket, if you will, that $17,000 bucket that way. And higher income people might have a lower number."

A Romney adviser said changes in other areas ? a taxpayer's personal exemption and the deduction or credit for health care ? would also be taken into account if deductions were limited as Romney suggested. Combining changes to those two areas with the limit on deductions would maintain Romney's goal of keeping tax burdens the same for wealthy and middle income taxpayers, the adviser said.

On another controversial subject, in a separate local interview ahead of the debate, Romney told The Denver Post that he would honor the temporary permission the Obama administration has granted to many young illegal immigrants to allow them to stay in the country.

Obama announced in June that he would prevent deportation for some children brought to the United States by illegal immigrant parents. Applicants must not have a serious criminal record and must meet other requirements, such as graduating from high school or serving in the U.S. military.

Romney had previously refused to say if he would retain the policy if he won the election.

He granted the interviews as he and Obama looked ahead to the debate, the first of three they will hold before Election Day on Nov. 6.

The debates, expected to draw a huge nationwide audience, takes place with most polls showing Obama slightly ahead both nationally and in the battleground states expected to settle the election.

Away from Denver, the campaign pressed ahead Tuesday on TV airwaves, in courts and in local election officials' offices across the states.

The Romney-supporting independent group Crossroads GPS launched an $11 million, 10-day ad campaign in eight swing states. Its new ad criticizes Obama's assertion that unemployment would fall if Congress passed his proposed stimulus law. The national unemployment rate still stands above 8 percent.

In Pennsylvania, meanwhile, a judge struck down a much-debated voter identification law, a victory for state Democrats who argued that it would prevent many minorities and elderly people from voting. The judge, Robert Simpson, wrote that he was concerned by the state's stumbling efforts to create a photo ID that would be easily accessible to voters. Pennsylvania, while long considered a battleground state, has backed Democrats in presidential elections for decades, and Romney has trailed Obama in polls there.

On another voter-eligibility matter, Romney's campaign has sent letters to election officials in Wisconsin, Mississippi and Vermont asking that the deadline for receiving ballots from military and overseas voters be extended.

In Denver, in his comments on taxes, Romney also cited the tax plan included in the Simpson-Bowles deficit commission recommendations as a possible course. That plan calls for reducing the top income tax rates. To pay for that, the plan would eliminate or reduce many popular tax breaks, including deductions for charitable donations and mortgage interest.

While Romney did not commit to making any specific changes, saying he would work with Congress, his suggestions were more specific than those he had offered in the past and provided a new window into his thinking on the subject. In the spring, Romney told donors that he would consider eliminating home mortgage deductions for second homes. That conversation, behind closed doors, was overheard by reporters standing on a private sidewalk.

The numbers are important because Romney has said that he will lower tax rates across the board without reducing government revenue. He also says he wants wealthy Americans to continue to shoulder the same share of the tax burden as they do today. One way to make the numbers add up would be to adjust tax deductions and exemptions.

Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul insisted his plan still would cut taxes for middle income earners. "There are a range of policy options, Gov. Romney referenced one illustrative example, to achieve these goals," Saul said in an emailed statement. She did not mention any other options.

Vice presidential nominees Joe Biden and Paul Ryan campaigned Tuesday in North Carolina and Iowa, respectively. Romney's campaign is looking to regain ground on Obama after falling further behind in battleground state polls in the wake of a video showing the Republican telling donors that 47 percent of Americans believe they are victims who are entitled to government assistance. A voter in Iowa asked Ryan about the exchange, and he acknowledged Romney's comments had muddied the political landscape.

"Sometimes the point doesn't get made the right way," he said.

Romney's interviews with Denver outlets were the last ones planned before he takes the stage Wednesday night. Moderator Jim Lehrer plans to focus on the economy, health care and the role of government.

Romney's tax plans are likely to be one focus. U.S. tax law at one time limited tax deductions and personal exemptions for high income people, but those limits were removed as part of the massive package of tax cuts passed under President George W. Bush. The limits are scheduled to return next year, when the Bush-era tax cuts are scheduled to expire unless Congress acts in the meantime. Romney and other Republicans want to extend all the tax cuts while Congress works to overhaul the federal tax code. Obama wants to extend them for individuals making less than $200,000 and married couples making less than $250,000.

Romney says his plan would generate the same amount of tax revenue as the current system but do it more efficiently, without raising taxes on any group of people. Romney also says he would not raise taxes on investment income.

The Tax Policy Center, a nonpartisan research group, says it is impossible to reduce tax rates by 20 percent for the wealthy without shifting some of the tax burden to middle class families. The Romney campaign disputes the study, which has also been challenged by several conservative think tanks.

Nokia wants to sell off its headquarters in Espoo, Finland, move in as tenant

DNP Nokia selling HQ

Just how deep do Nokia's financial woes go? According to Finnish journal Helsingin Sanomat and Reuters, deep enough that it's mulling the sale of Nokia House, its principal HQ located in Espoo, Finland. The company told the journals that it's looking to divest "non-core parts" of its business, "and that includes the headquarters," according to a spokesman. Since Nokia has lost billions just in the last two quarters alone, it is likely looking for cash wherever it can and its Espoo property is worth $250-400 million, according to Helsingin. However, the cellphone maker is adamant it would stay in its home country, and could remain a primary tenant in the sprawling complex after such a sale. If they do unload the property, we're just glad we recently got some souvenirs.
