WSU 'Water Works' features Utah poet Katharine Coles

Birds, water and ice are on the agenda for the evening.

Poet, novelist and editor Katharine Coles, 53, of Salt Lake City, will do a reading at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Special Collections room in the Stewart Library on the Weber State University campus.

The event is free to the public. Several of Coles? books will be available for sale at the event and also in the WSU Bookstore.

Coles, who grew up in Utah and is the past poet laureate for the state, addresses the importance of nature and science in people?s lives.

Coles? visit is part of the campus-wide, yearlong program called ?Water Works.? Several guest speakers, from artists to explorers, are coming to WSU this school year ? all addressing a water theme. (Go to http://weber.edu/waterworks/ for more details.)

?I?ll be reading quite a lot of the Antarctica poems, because where I was in Antarctica was pretty much all water and ice,? Coles said.?

She spent a month in 2010 living on the science station in Antarctica, thanks to the National Science Foundation?s Antarctic Artists and Writers Program.?

?Going to Antarctica is one of the greatest adventures you can have without leaving the planet,? she said. ?It?s that inspirational.?

Her poem ?Tempo for a Winged Instrument? is about the birds in Antarctica. ?There is a lot of light in the poem,? Coles said. ?It was light all the time there. And there are no land animals in Antarctica ? only birds and creatures of the water.?

Coles is the immediate past poet laureate of Utah. ?It?s a pretty prestigious award. It validated the quality of poetry we have in Utah,? said David Pace, Literary Arts and Arts Education Specialist for the Utah Division of Arts and Museums.

Coles has written several collections of poems, including ?The Golden Years of the Fourth Dimension,? ?A History of the Garden? and ?The One Right Touch.? She has also published two novels: ?The Measurable World? and ?Fire Season.?

Some of Coles? poems are simply about her dogs. ?Elegy for a Dog Larger Than Life,? is about her husband?s dog, Andre, a Newfoundland mix with some Labrador thrown in. Andre had serious health problems and almost died on Christmas Day. Coles said she wrote the poem while they were waiting at the animal hospital and she thought the dog was dying. Andre actually lived another couple of years.

Another dog poem, ?The Double Leash,? is about Coles walking her two dogs, who have since passed away: Quigley, a golden retriever, and Cleo, a border collie/Australian shepherd mix. ?They were my constant companions for many years,? she said. ?I used to run with them and we were together all the time.?

The Andra Collection

Coles? writings are part of the Carl E. Andra Memorial Collection, which was started in the Weber State Library Special Collections in 1977 by Jean Andra (now Jean Andra Miller) in memory of her first husband, the late Carl E. Andra, who was an assistant professor of English at WSU from 1965 until he died.?

The collection emphasizes his favorite aspect of contemporary American and English literature of the 20th century.

The collection houses approximately 1,500 volumes. It contains many works that are first editions, or signed by the authors, as well as works of rare or collectible importance.

?My absolute favorite piece is the signed Ernest Hemingway: ?Men Without Women,? ? said Sarah Langsdon, associate curator of special collections at WSU Stewart Library. ?It?s a very valuable piece ? and an interesting piece of Americana.?

The endowment for the Andra Collection, completed in 2011, specified that poetry readings be offered ?from time to time to draw attention to the collection?s existence and importance to the campus and community. It was agreed that poets of regional, state, or local importance be featured.

Coles is a professor of English at the University of Utah. She earned a bachelor?s degree at the University of Washington, a master?s degree at the University of Houston and a doctorate at the University of Utah.

She has also received a fellowship and a New Forms Project grant from the National Endowment for the Arts; a PEN New Writer?s Award; and grants from the Utah Arts Council and the Salt Lake City Arts Council.

Go to www.poetryfoundation.org/bio/katharine-coles#about to read selected Coles works.

Muffin Pan Omelets Let You Make Breakfast for the Week in One Batch [Breakfast]

Muffin Pan Omelets Let You Make Breakfast for the Week in One BatchWhen you're getting ready in the morning it might be difficult to take the time to make a proper breakfast, especially if you're trying to get more eggs in your diet. Here's an easy way to make mini-omelets in a muffin tin that you can quickly reheat in the microwave before heading out the door.

Culinary weblog Coleen's Recipes shares how to make mini-omelets in your muffin/cupcake pans. Preheat your oven (375 F), spray the pan with your cooking spray of choice. Whisk eggs, milk, oil, baking powder, and salt and pepper together. Divide whatever chopped meat and vegetable toppings into the sprayed cupcake wells, fill each well with the egg mixture, add some shredded cheese on top if you like, and then bake for around 20 minutes. See the source link below for exact measurements.

You can make a batch on Sunday evening, put them in a freezer bag in your refrigerator, and store any mini-omelets you won't use that week in your freezer. That way each morning all you have to do is reheat one or two mini-omelets and perhaps add toast.

Pay penalty within six weeks, encroacher told - Real Estate India

??|?? September 28, 2012 ?? 08:25am ??|Contributed by manoja

Tribune News Service

Shimla, September 27
Once the proceedings have been initiated under the HP Land Revenue Act and for that matter under any special Act, the same are required to be taken to a logical end. The parties may not be permitted to assail the orders that have been passed by the revenue court in the civil court in view of the specific ouster clause.

This was held by the state high court in a matter pertaining to unauthorised encroachment by Pyare Lal of Shimla on government land.

The court has set an example for other encroachers and dealt the encroacher on government land with a heavy hand and directed him to pay Rs 5 lakh as mesne profits and exemplary/penal costs to the state government within six weeks.

While passing this order, Justice Rajiv Sharma observed that in case the amount was not deposited, the Deputy Commissioner, Shimla, was to recover the same by way of arrears of land revenue.

The court directed all revenue officers in the state that while passing the orders of eviction, they must take steps for neutralising interim orders by awarding compensation, mesne profits and exemplary/penal costs.

It further directed them to send a copy of the judgment to the Financial Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Revenue), HP, for its due compliance.

This order came on a appeal filed by Pyare Lal of Rohroo, Shimla, against the state government claiming to be owner of the land by way of adverse possession.

He claimed that he was in possession of land since the time of his ancestors and had also raised an apple orchard on the suit land.

The state government contended that on receipt of information that he had encroached upon the suit land, the Assistant Collector (first grade) proceeded with under Section 163 of the HP Land Revenue Act and found that the encroachment was fresh and no title by way of adverse possession had been acquired by Pyare Lal.

Bankruptcy Trustee, Friend Or Foe

Once the filing has been finished, the petitioner may want to take steps to rebuild credit. Many persons exiting a filing will begin with the purchase of a used vehicle. By making payments on time, the person can rebuild credit. In addition, time does help to improve the credit score and in a few years, the filing is a simple black mark that might have less impact than all the negative reports one might face without having made the petition.

What to watch in Supreme Court's new term

WASHINGTON (AP) ? When last we saw the chief justice of the United States on the bench, John Roberts was joining with the Supreme Court's liberals in an unlikely lineup that upheld President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

Progressives applauded Roberts' statesmanship. Conservatives uttered cries of betrayal.

Now, the Supreme Court is embarking on a new term beginning Monday that could be as consequential as the last one, with the prospect for major rulings about affirmative action, gay marriage and voting rights.

Many people on both the left and right expect Roberts to return to the fold and side with the conservative justices in the new term's big cases. If they're right, the spotlight will be back on Justice Anthony Kennedy, whose vote typically is decisive in cases that otherwise split the court's liberals and conservatives.

But Roberts will be watched closely, following his health care vote, for fresh signs that he's becoming less ideologically predictable.

It may be that the dramatic health care decision presages "some shift in his tenure as chief justice," said Steve Shapiro, the American Civil Liberties Union's national legal director. "Or does it give him cover to continue to pursue a conservative agenda?"

The first piece of evidence could be in the court's consideration of the University of Texas' already limited use of race to help fill its incoming freshman classes, which comes before the court Oct. 10. The outcome could further limit or even end the use of racial preferences in college admissions.

Roberts has expressed contempt for the use of race in drawing legislative districts, calling it "a sordid business, this divvying us up by race," and in assigning students to public schools, saying that "the way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race."

The written arguments submitted by both sides in the Texas case leave little doubt that Kennedy, not Roberts, holds the prized vote. The challengers of the Texas program and the university itself cite Kennedy's prior writings on affirmative action a combined 50 times.

The court also is expected to confront gay marriage in some form. Several cases seek to guarantee federal benefits for legally married same-sex couples. A provision of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act deprives same-sex couples of a range of federal benefits available to heterosexual couples.

Several federal courts have agreed that the provision of the law is unconstitutional, a situation that practically ensures that the high court will step in.

A separate appeal asks the justices to sustain California's Proposition 8, the amendment to the state constitution that outlawed gay marriage in the nation's largest state. Federal courts in California have struck down the amendment.

Once again, many legal analysts expect Roberts essentially to be against gay marriage. "The outcome clearly turns on how Anthony Kennedy votes," said Georgetown University law professor Michael Seidman.

The justices may not even consider whether to hear the gay marriage issue until November.

Another hot topic with appeals pending before the high court, and more soon to follow, is the future of a cornerstone law of the civil rights movement.

In 2006, Congress overwhelmingly approved, and President George W. Bush signed, legislation extending for 25 more years a critical piece of the Voting Rights Act. It requires states and local governments with a history of racial and ethnic discrimination, mainly in the South, to get advance approval either from the Justice Department or the federal court in Washington before making any changes that affect elections.

The requirement currently applies to the states of Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia. It also covers certain counties in California, Florida, New York, North Carolina and South Dakota, and some local jurisdictions in Michigan and New Hampshire. Coverage has been triggered by past discrimination not only against blacks, but also against American Indians, Asian-Americans, Alaskan Natives and Hispanics.

The court spoke skeptically about the provision in a 2009 decision, but left it mostly unchanged. Now, however, cases from Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas could prompt the court to deal head on with the issue of advance approval. The South Carolina and Texas cases involve voter identification laws; a similar Indiana law was previously upheld by the court.

It is unclear when the justices will decide whether to hear arguments in those cases. Arguments themselves would not take place until next year.

Yet there still is a chance that the court could become enmeshed in election disputes, even before the ballots are counted. Suits in Ohio over early voting and provisional ballots appear the most likely to find their way to the justices before the Nov. 6 election, said Richard Hasen, an election law expert at the University of California at Irvine law school.

Among other important cases already on the court's docket:

? A high-stakes dispute, to be argued first thing Monday, between the business community and human rights advocates over the reach of a 1789 law. The issue is whether businesses can be sued in U.S. courts for human rights violations that take place on foreign soil and have foreign victims.

? A challenge to the use of drug-sniffing dogs in two situations. Florida police used a marijuana-sniffing dog's alert at the door of a private home to obtain a search warrant to look inside the house. The question is whether the dog's sniff itself was a search. A separate case looks at the reliability of animals trained to pick up the scent of illegal drugs.

? A challenge to the detention of a man who police picked up a mile away from an apartment they had a warrant to search. Occupants of a home may be detained during the search for the safety of officers, but this case tests how far that authority extends away from the place to be searched.

? Environmental disputes involving runoff from logging roads in Oregon and water pollution in Los Angeles.

Paul Clement, the Republican lawyer who lost the health care case and could be before the justices on gay marriage and voting rights, said last term punctured the notion that in close cases, the court goes where Kennedy wants.

"We've all been reminded that's not always the case," he said.

The idea that could be tested this term is whether Roberts' concern for the court as an institution that is apart from politics will influence his votes, or at least his reasoning, in the year's biggest cases.

Prosecutors: Holmes threatened prof before theater attack

By NBC News staff and wire services

?

Reuters

Colorado shooting suspect James Eagan Holmes makes his first court appearance in Aurora, Colorado on July 23.

The suspect in a deadly movie theater attack in Colorado threatened a professor before the shooting, leading the university to ban him from campus, prosecutors said in court documents released Friday.

The name of the person James Eagan Holmes threatened has been blacked out. Prosecutors say the person reported the threats, and Holmes was denied access to campus "as a result of these actions."

In other documents, defense attorneys say the prosecutors' allegations are false, based on university statements.

The University of Colorado has said Holmes was denied access to non-public parts of the campus because he had withdrawn from school.

After weeks of secrecy surrounding the case, most of the documents filed in court were released to the public on Friday.

Holmes, 24, faces 152 charges in the July 20 shooting at an Aurora movie theater during a midnight showing of the new Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises." The attack killed 12 people and injured 58 others.

Defense attorneys claim Holmes is mentally ill and sought the help of a university psychiatrist before the shooting, raising the possibility that Holmes will plead not guilty by reason of insanity.

In court, prosecutors raised the prospect that Holmes was angry at the failure of a once promising academic career and stockpiled weapons, ammunition, tear gas grenades, and body armor as his research deteriorated and professors urged him to get into another profession. Chief Deputy District Attorney Karen Pearson said Holmes failed a key oral exam in June, was banned from campus and began to voluntarily withdraw from the school.

Key information in the case gleaned from previous court documents includes:

  • Confirmation that Holmes sent a package to CU psychiatrist Lynne Fenton. In the document, defense attorneys Daniel King and Tamara Brady described Fenton as Holmes' psychiatrist, although prosecutors have said that their doctor-patient relationship ended on June 11, weeks before the attack. The package contains a notebook that reportedly includes descriptions and drawings of an attack, but Fenton said she never saw the notebook.
  • Information from prosecutors that Holmes in March spoke with another student about killing people "when his life was over."

Prosecutors and defense attorneys had asked that court documents be sealed to preserve an ongoing investigation and protect Holmes' right to a fair trial. Sylvester ordered that some information in the documents that will be released have information blacked out to protect the identities of witnesses. Documents that won't be released include an arrest affidavit, which contains information about the investigation, as well as requests for search warrants and subpoenas.

In his order, Sylvester noted that some information contained in court documents had been divulged in court and placing limits on what's released balances the public's First Amendment rights to see the court file, and prosecutors' and defense attorneys' concerns.

How to: Work out how much your pet costs | Stuff.co.nz

Puppies

REALITY BITES: How much are these doggies? Expensive - but cheaper than raising a child.

How much is that doggy in the window?

His "waggly tail" needs surgical correction. He only eats the best chow. He needs to be microchipped, registered, groomed, clipped, spayed, de-fleaed, and sent to doggy day-care. Then there are collars, leads, a coat when it's cold, a snug kennel and a selection of toys.

On closer inspection, the little doggy's price tag reads anywhere between $10,000- $15,000.

Getting a pet is a big financial decision when you calculate the expenses over the lifespan of the animal. Not many people think about it in those terms, but perhaps they should.

"If we look at why animals are abandoned or surrendered...probably the biggest element would be cost," says SPCA national president Bob Kerridge.

The SPCA's intake of unwanted animals would probably make a good economic index. It spikes when times are hard.

"Quite often, sadly, the animal is down the list," Kerridge says.

Luckily the animal kingdom has provided us with a rich selection of companions that can match any price range.

We've worked out how much popular pets will cost you over the course of their lifetime- all the way from goldfish to giraffes.

Just for fun we've also compared the cost of each animal to the expense of raising a human child to age 18, which Inland Revenue pegged at $250,000 a few years ago.

GOLDFISH
$100 startup cost, $20 annual expenses, $300 lifetime cost over 10 years.

Buy a goldfish. Plonk it in a bowl. Feed it. Goldfish are low cost and low maintenance - the perfect entry-level pet.

While many are quickly sent down the porcelain chute to fishy heaven, goldfish actually live for 10 years when looked after properly.

A quick call to Four Seasons Pets confirms that yes, they do need flowing water unless you're prepared to change it every couple of days.

Filters start at $23 and the electricity cost is minimal. The only recurring cost is fish-food, dispensed a pinch at a time.

In fact, goldfish are so ridiculously cheap to run that you could have more than 1,000 fishy friends for the price of raising a single child.

GUINEA PIG
$250 startup cost, $150 annual expenses, $1,150 lifetime cost over six years.

The cost of keeping a guinea pig is very low, says NZ Cavy Club treasurer Christa Krey.

"If it is kept in an outside run on grass, it can be supplemented with the household vegetable and fruit scraps, cost zero."

Hay for bedding and food is essential- $16 a year bought in bulk, she says. Pellets cost about $90 a year if you don't have other food sources.

A hutch will set you back about $200 and the pigs themselves are only about $10.

If they're sharing hutches and hay, you could care for 380 furry fluffballs for the price of a child.

BUDGIE
$150 startup cost, $150 annual expenses, $1,650 lifetime cost over 10 years.

Budgerigars are going cheap (or should that be cheep?) on TradeMe for about $10-$20, and a 10kg sack of birdseed costs $32 at pet stores.

They're as inexpensive as guinea pigs but live a few extra years before falling off the perch, hence the higher lifetime cost.

Economies of scale by housing a flock of budgies sharing toys, grit and aviaries mean you could raise roughly 320 birds for the price of a kid.

CAT
$250 startup cost, $466 annual expenses, $7,250 lifetime cost over 15 years.

The average cat costs $466 a year, according to a report published last year by the Companion Animal Council (CAC).

That's a big step up from the smaller critters. It's probably because cats love to eat and they love to fight. Your average feline friend chows down on $275 of Whiskas a year, and chews through $125 for vet fees and healthcare.

The rest is a mix of kitty litter, toys, boarding fees and all the other accumulated expenses.

You can adopt a kitten from the SPCA for $150, which has already been microchipped and vaccinated. But it still needs to be desexed, which costs $60 - $100, and kitted out with a collar, bowl and other feline paraphernalia.

What's the kitten-to-kid expense ratio? A crazy cat lady with 34 moggies caterwauling and tearing up the furniture will come out roughly the same as if she had a single child.

DOG
$700 startup cost, $1,047 annual expenses, $13,250 lifetime cost over 12 years.

Canine companions are roughly twice as expensive as cats. There's the added cost of registration, which can be as much as $130 a year or more if the breed is classified as dangerous.

"When registration on dogs are due, there is a spike in dogs being surrendered," says the SPCA's Kerridge.

Like cats, healthcare and food are the big costs, but they're scaled up accordingly. CAC found that your average hound costs $1,047 a year, of which $465 goes towards tucker and $262 to the vet.

On top of that, there's a whole range of extra spending on grooming, boarding, clothing and more.

Start-up costs are higher too. Adopting a puppy costs $260, desexing is another couple of hundred, a kennel the same again and collars and leads are about $50.

You'd have to be barking mad, but you could spend a small fortune on 18 dogs and be no worse off financially then if you'd raised a child.

HORSE
$6,000 startup cost, $3,000 annual expenses, $80,000 lifetime cost over 25 years

Surprisingly, the CAC report put the cost of a horse or pony lower than a dog, at $895 a year.

Horsetalk.co.nz calculated the conservative annual maintenance cost at $3,000 a few years back, and editor Robin Marshall says that figure is still accurate.

Marshall knows the costs of ownership better than most - she's just had the dentist in to see seven horses ($490), and paid $150 for sports massage therapy for two.

"I do believe if you can't afford the costs that go along with a horse - including unexpected vet costs - you should not have them," she says.

If you don't have land, grazing is a huge expense. It varies but can be $50 a week or more, which quickly becomes thousands over the course of a year.

Marshall notes that if your horse competes the costs skyrocket, with all the associated gear, travel, vehicles and entry fees.

For all of that, you can still have three horses trotting around and be financially better off than having a sprog.

GIRAFFE
Unknown startup cost, $5,000-$10,000 annual expenses, $250,000 lifetime cost over 25 years

Why bother with cats and dogs when you can own six-metre tall African monsters capable of kicking lions to death?

Perhaps that was NBR Rich-lister Alan Gibbs' line of thinking when he installed two giraffes on his massive Kaipara sculpture park

It's the pet for the man who has it all - specifically, all the money. The cost of buying and transporting a giraffe is skyhigh.

Then there's all the upkeep expenses - housing, industrial-strength fencing, and a really, really long leash.

Wellington Zoo's only male giraffe died two weeks ago and a replacement imported from the United States could cost as much as $100,000.

The zoo says each giraffe chews through about $100 worth of food a week and also needs heating to replicate the natural habitat.

Taking a wild guess, we'll say the cost of giraffe ownership works out at least on par with a child, and probably much more.

China joins 9-nation club with first aircraft carrier

AP

China's first aircraft carrier is decorated with colored flags at a shipyard in Dalian in northeast China's Liaoning province Monday.

By Ed Flanagan, NBC News

China brought its first aircraft carrier into service Tuesday, raising the country?s military capability amid heightened tensions with its regional neighbors.

Christened Liaoning -- after the port where the carrier was significantly overhauled after being bought from Ukraine -- this new addition to China?s navy is not large compared to America?s super carriers, but could still potentially have an impact on territorial disputes in the region.

?The aircraft carrier will play an important role in China's settlement of islands disputes and defense of its maritime rights and interests,? said Chinese naval expert, Li Jie, in an interview with Chinese newspaper, People?s Daily.???

The rest of China?s state media also played up the significance of the Liaoning, with the China News Service writing that the Liaoning would have ?far-reaching influence on protecting China?s territory, safety and development and to make the world more peaceful.?

Taiwanese ships clash with Japanese coast guard over disputed islands

The commissioning of the ship is a huge display of national prestige, elevating China to the nine-nation club of carrier-equipped navies.

Presided over by President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao, the unveiling of the Liaoning also comes just before a once-a-decade leadership change in China, during which a new generation of top leaders will be introduced.

China's Ministry of Defense welcomed the new ship, declaring that it would "raise the overall operational strength of the Chinese navy" and help Beijing to "effectively protect national sovereignty, security and development interests."

Japanese coast guard ships shoot water cannon at Taiwanese fishing boats in the East China Sea in a territorial dispute. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

The ship?s full capabilities remain unknown at this point, but the size of the Liaoning and China?s relative lack of technical experience with carrier operations suggests that it will serve more as a training vessel then a deployable ship for combat operations.

The carrier can reportedly hold a compliment of 30 fixed-wing fighters compared to the much larger American Nimitz class carriers than can carry around 90 aircraft.

China?s normally nationalistic newspaper, Global Times, warned yesterday that the Liaoning ?does not have the capacity to handle its tasks as it needs more adaptation to enhance its fighting capacity.?

Japan infuriates China by buying disputed isles

Still, the Global Times and other Chinese media were quick to link the launching of the Liaoning with the ongoing tensions around the region.?

Japan has been locked in a bitter spat with China over ownership of islands claimed by both countries.

The Japanese central government?s move this month to purchase the East China Sea islands, called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, from their private owner led to heated nationwide protests in China that forced many Japanese companies like Panasonic, Toyota and Canon to suspend operations.?

Much at stake for US as tensions rise in troubled China Seas

While the protests have subsided, tensions have remained heightened. Just this week, China?s Vice Foreign Minister, Z|hang Zhijun told his Japanese counterpart, "China will never tolerate any bilateral actions by Japan that harm Chinese territorial sovereignty? Japan must banish illusions, undertake searching reflection and use concrete actions to amend its errors, returning to the consensus and understandings reached between our two countries' leaders."

Chinese protesters: 'The Diaoyu islands belong to China!'

Japanese embassy officials in London did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the Liaoning and ongoing territorial issues.

Tokyo has known for years about China?s aircraft carrier ambitions, but now must deal with the blowback of this announcement with an increasingly concerned and nationalist home audience.

With Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda poised to call for new elections later this year, he can ill afford to look weak on Chinese intransigence in the East China Sea.

Emotional anniversary reignites anti-Japan protests in China

The odds of war breaking out between the two largest Asian economies remain remote, but there have been clashes in the waters around the Diaoyu islands, with Chinese and now Taiwanese fishing ships entering the island chain?s territorial waters, a move the Japanese view as an intrusion on their territory.?

Though the Liaoning was formally named Tuesday, the carrier has actually been decades in the making.?The ship was built at a Ukrainian shipyard in 1988 and dubbed the Varyag.?It was purchased a decade later by China and retrofitted.

5 tips for avoiding financial regret | West Central Tribune | Willmar ...

Most people say their greatest financial regret is habitually overspending, according to the National Foundation for Credit Counseling.

The foundation recently conducted an online poll and out of more than 2,200 respondents, 53 percent said habitual overspending was their biggest financial regret.

Overspending far outweighed other financial concerns. Of respondents, 18 percent regretted inadequately saving, 14 percent regretted insufficiently preparing for retirement, 10 percent regretted not having bought a house, and 5 percent regretted buying a house, according to a news release.

?Although most people have financial regrets, it is important to not dwell on past mistakes,? said Gail Cunningham, foundation spokeswoman. ?Instead, look forward and take action by constructing a plan that recognizes the realities of the situation, repairs financial damage, and moves in a positive direction toward financial security.?

Financial counselors at The Village Family Service Center, a National Foundation for Credit Counseling member agency headquartered in Fargo, N.D., offer the following five tips for avoiding financial regret:

1. Create a budget:

A budget is the cornerstone that a sound financial future is built upon. Without it, danger signals are missed and spending can easily spiral out of control. For help getting started, use the Spending Plan Worksheet on The Village?s website at www.HelpWithMoney.org.

2. Become a track star:

Track your spending by writing down every cent you spend for 30 days and do this at least once every six months. The exercise will reveal any leaks in your budget and provide an opportunity to adjust your spending to best meet your goals.

3. Review your credit report:

A credit report is a reflection of a person?s financial track record, and is the basis of the credit score, making it a must-read, particularly for those rebuilding credit. Consumers are allowed one free credit report every 12 months from each of the three bureaus. To access your free report, go to www.AnnualCreditReport.com.

4. Realize that life happens:

Life is filled with the unexpected, but you can guard against this by creating a financial safety net. Even small amounts of money consistently deposited into a rainy day savings account can create enough of a cushion to make it through most short-term emergencies.

5. Become a financial adult:

Be financially mature by understanding the nuts and bolts of personal finance, and acting on that knowledge. This may involve making hard choices or changing your attitudes, behaviors and lifestyle, but it is unlikely that financial decisions made on auto-pilot will result in a smooth landing.

To get help avoiding or recovering from financial missteps, contact financial counselors at The Village Family Service Center at (800) 450-4019 or www.HelpWithMoney.org.

How consumer-electronics makers are faring

Makers and sellers of consumer-electronics devices have been releasing their earnings reports for the latest quarter. Here's a look at selected companies that report unit sales on phones, tablet computers and other devices. Some companies including Samsung Electronics Co. do not release data on unit sales.

? July 19: Microsoft Corp. says it shipped 1.1 million Xbox 360 consoles during the April-June period, down from 1.7 million a year earlier.

Nokia Corp. says sales of smartphones dropped 39 percent from a year ago to 10.2 million in the second quarter. The company blamed "strong momentum" of competing smartphones. All regions showed a decline except North America, where sales of the new Windows-based Lumia line offset declines in traditional Symbian devices. Sales of all cellphones fell 5 percent to 83.7 million.

? July 24: Apple Inc. says it sold 26 million iPhones, 28 percent more than a year ago. It also sold 17 million iPads, an 84 percent increase. But average selling prices for both products were down. Apple sold 4 million Macs, a 2 percent increase, and 6.8 million iPods, a 10 percent decline.

TomTom says it sold 1.7 million personal-navigation devices in North America, down from 2.1 million a year ago. In Europe, it sold 2.4 million, down from 2.8 million. TomTom says market share was relatively flat at 45 percent in Europe, but down to 19 percent from 23 percent in North America because of a GPS chip product issue.

AT&T Inc. says it activated 5.1 million smartphones in its latest quarter, down from 5.5 million in the same period a year ago. Much of the decline came because AT&T subscribers are holding on to their phones longer.

? July 25: Nintendo Co. says it sold 710,000 Wii units in the April-June quarter, down from 1.56 million a year ago. Nintendo is coming out with a successor, the Wii U, this year. It is forecasting 10.5 million units for the full fiscal year, which ends in March 2013. The company, meanwhile, sold 540,000 DS units, down from 1.44 million a year ago, and it sold 1.86 million 3DS units, up from 710,000 a year ago.

? Aug. 1: Garmin Ltd. says it sold 3.9 million GPS navigation and other devices in the second quarter, up 4 percent from a year earlier.

? Aug. 2: Sony Corp. says it sold 2.8 million PlayStation units, down from 3.2 million a year earlier. The figures cover both PlayStation 3 and the older PlayStation 2. Sales of the PlayStation Portable and Vita devices were at 1.4 million, down from 1.8 million a year earlier.

? Sept. 6: Samsung says global sales of its Galaxy S III smartphone have surpassed 20 million in a little more than three months. Samsung Electronics Co. launched the flagship smartphone powered by Google's Android operating system in Europe in late May. The U.S. got it in June.

? Sept. 24: Apple Inc. says that it sold more than 5 million units of the iPhone 5 in the three days since its launch, fewer than analysts had expected. The sales tally is a record for any phone, but it beats last year's iPhone 4S launch only by a small margin. Apple said then that it sold 4 million phones in the first three days.

Coming up:

Ezine publishing fills this need and also supplies internet marketers with avenues for making profit. Writing and producing a newsletter can lead to high earning potential. With as few as a thousand subscribers, the profits can be impressive.

There are no set rules for ezine publishing or creating a newsletter but with a little investigation into this market and a bit of caution in your approach, your income can increase every month.

It is not necessary to be a business consultant or stock market insider in order to create a newsletter about that topic. Ezine publishing can cater to many types of activities; sports, hobby crafting, health, home improvement and ways of making money.

Probably the biggest key to success in ezine publishing is to do plenty of research into the people who make up the market of your likely subscribers. Think about the hobbies and interests that you are involved in that could translate into an income producing newsletter. Interview friends, relatives and associates who are skilled in a particular area and use their expertise to build good content.

A successful newsletter will be written about a single subject, it will be timely and contain content of high quality. Add a resource box to the end of each newsletter and make sure the report has value to the readers in your chosen market. Keep the resource box humble, overt selling will not gain as many customers as a softer approach.

Each report should contain a concise statement from someone who is an expert or at least completely familiar with the specialized field. No overt advertising should be included, only content-rich, high quality material. The information should be current and unique, readers should not be able to find this material anywhere else. Readers need to feel they are getting inside information, a hot tip, news scoop or a story that is fresh and new.

Ezine publishing should not be aimed for mass market appeal, instead it should be laser targeted toward the select group of people most likely to be interested in any particular field.

Market saturation should not be a concern even with all the media available. There is plenty of general information on most any subject, good ezine publishing will present a more specialized viewpoint.

Focusing a newsletter on success and motivation with plenty of enthusiasm for the subject is the key to staying ahead of the competition. Loyal subscribers expect superior knowledge, and will be more likely to purchase a recommended product or service.

Internet marketers depend on their subscribers for income, ezine publishing that provides outstanding value will not only create a solid customer base, but happy customers will always tell a friend and this generates more website traffic.
