Even Laos is attracting thousands of golfers, despite having only four major golf resorts, whereas Cambodia, like Vietnam, has outsourced its golf tourism marketing to American-owned companies.

Absolutely nothing.

This may come as a surprise to those fortunate enough to be familiar with Indonesia?s fabulous world of golf and leisure. But it was no surprise to me.

I have unsuccessfully sought to convince stakeholders in the local golf and tourism industries to join forces to promote Indonesia to the world as a golf tourism destination. But bringing together our golf industry and our national and regional tourism promotion offices has turned out to ?mission impossible?.

This is truly a wasted opportunity, when Indonesia?s golf tourism products equal or surpass those of our neighbors in so many ways.

Our golf courses and facilities are just as good as those in Thailand, Malaysia or China. We even have our own version of ?Mission Hills? ? Jakarta?s Jagorawi toll road gives easy access to 17 fabulous courses. Golf courses here were designed by the best in the business and are located in stunning natural settings. They are accessible, high quality and well maintained. They are managed in a highly professional manner and are ready to welcome even the most spoiled golf traveler. Then there are our caddies, who are in a class of their own: They?re pretty, friendly and, most importantly, they are very knowledgeable. What?s more, they are proficient in English and fun to be with.

The Many Moods of Titan

ScienceDaily (Feb. 24, 2012) ? A set of recent papers, many of which draw on data from NASA's Cassini spacecraft, reveal new details in the emerging picture of how Saturn's moon Titan shifts with the seasons and even throughout the day. The papers, published in the journal Planetary and Space Science in a special issue titled "Titan through Time," show how this largest moon of Saturn is a cousin -- though a very peculiar cousin -- of Earth.

"As a whole, these papers give us some new pieces in the jigsaw puzzle that is Titan," said Conor Nixon, a Cassini team scientist at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md., who co-edited the special issue with Ralph Lorenz, a Cassini team scientist based at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Laurel, Md. "They show us in detail how Titan's atmosphere and surface behave like Earth's -- with clouds, rainfall, river valleys and lakes. They show us that the seasons change, too, on Titan, although in unexpected ways."

A paper led by Stephane Le Mouelic, a Cassini team associate at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) at the University of Nantes, highlights the kind of seasonal changes that occur at Titan with a set of the best looks yet at the vast north polar cloud.

A newly published selection of images -- made from data collected by Cassini's visual and infrared mapping spectrometer over five years -- shows how the cloud thinned out and retreated as winter turned to spring in the northern hemisphere.

Cassini first detected the cloud, which scientists think is composed of ethane, shortly after its arrival in the Saturn system in 2004. The first really good opportunity for the spectrometer to observe the half-lit north pole occurred on December 2006. At that time, the cloud appeared to cover the north pole completely down to about 55 degrees north latitude. But in the 2009 images, the cloud cover had so many gaps it unveiled to Cassini's view the hydrocarbon sea known as Kraken Mare and surrounding lakes.

"Snapshot by snapshot, these images give Cassini scientists concrete evidence that Titan's atmosphere changes with the seasons," said Le Mouelic. "We can't wait to see more of the surface, in particular in the northern land of lakes and seas."

In data gathered by Cassini's composite infrared mapping spectrometer to analyze temperatures on Titan's surface, not only did scientists see seasonal change on Titan, but they also saw day-to-night surface temperature changes for the first time. The paper, led by Valeria Cottini, a Cassini associate based at Goddard, used data collected at a wavelength that penetrated through Titan's thick haze to see the moon's surface. Like Earth, the surface temperature of Titan, which is usually in the chilly mid-90 kelvins (around minus 288 degrees Fahrenheit), was significantly warmer in the late afternoon than around dawn.

"While the temperature difference -- 1.5 kelvins -- is smaller than what we're used to on Earth, the finding still shows that Titan's surface behaves in ways familiar to us earthlings," Cottini said. "We now see how the long Titan day (about 16 Earth days) reveals itself through the clouds."

A third paper by Dominic Fortes, an outside researcher based at University College London, England, addresses the long-standing mystery of the structure of Titan's interior and its relationship to the strikingly Earth-like range of geologic features seen on the surface. Fortes constructed an array of models of Titan's interior and compared these with newly acquired data from Cassini's radio science experiment.

The work shows the moon's interior is partly or possibly even fully differentiated. This means that the core is denser than outer parts of the moon, although less dense than expected. This may be because the core still contains a large amount of ice or because the rocks have reacted with water to form low-density minerals.

Earth and other terrestrial planets are fully differentiated and have a dense iron core. Fortes' model, however, rules out a metallic core inside Titan and agrees with Cassini magnetometer data that suggests a relatively cool and wet rocky interior. The new model also highlights the difficulty in explaining the presence of important gases in Titan's atmosphere, such as methane and argon-40, since they do not appear to be able to escape from the core.

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory manages the mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington, D.C. The visual and infrared mapping spectrometer team is based at the University of Arizona, Tucson. The composite infrared spectrometer team is based at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., where the instrument was built. The radio science subsystem has been jointly developed by NASA and the Italian Space Agency.

Ad Agency BBH Moves Into Social Gaming, Seeks Developers Who Like Lollipops

Bartle Bogle Hegarty today became the latest company to make the leap into social gaming, and it is on the lookout to give seed funding to social gaming developers who want to make the jump with them. The ad agency's Asian division, BBH Asia Pacific, has opened a new venture, Chuck Studios, which will be run in partnership with one of its longtime clients, the confectionery giant Perfetti Van Melle -- makers of Chupa Chups lollipops. Together, the two will invest in social games promoting the brand, in exchange for a share of whatever revenue is made from the content. The first product of the venture, Chupa Chucker, made in partnership with studio Atommica, goes live today on Facebook. Future games will also run on iOS, Android, and HTML5, BBH tells us. "The only requirement is that the numbers have to check out."

S(T)OPA As Perceived By A Law Academic || Dotted Music

TThe Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) is part of a seemingly more aggressive legislative strategy designed to combat the unauthorised infringement of IP rights on the Internet along with its (ugly) sisters the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA).

Google was just one of several big names to voice its opposition to SOPA.

It could be seen as the US equivalent to the current trend in European jurisdictions through the involvement of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in cases of copyright infringement. The logic of this is understandable enough: suing end-users and measures involving Digital Rights Management (DRM) proved largely unsuccessful; either because they failed to stop the issue of digital copyright infringement or because they were largely PR disasters for the rights holders involved. Usually both.

In place of this, ISPs are in a position to potentially take more effective action; and have the technical means and resources available to do-so. The definition of an ISP at the European level is rather abstract, requiring reference to both a ?service provider? and an ?information society service? (see article 2(b) of the E-commerce Directive 2000/31/EC). In the United States it is slightly more concrete, inasmuch that one does not have to look up two different things. It is defined as, ?? an entity offering the transmission, routing, or providing connections for digital online communications??, and furthermore, ?? a provider of online services or network access, of the operator of services therefore?? (see Title 17, chapter 5 of the US Code, s512 (k)(1)). Either way, both definitions are quite vague and in the American context is something SOPA has significantly exploited.

An ISP is the person who makes it possible for you to essentially go online and proceed about your business. For the privilege, you pay them a fee every month and you usually get an email address that you?ll never use. But consider, for a moment, the services that enable you to do things once you are online: search engines, payment operators, advertising, etc.. All services which are a functional, usable and commercial part of the Internet?s operation, serving both private and commercial users. All services which SOPA targets: the people who provide you with access to the Internet (?Service Providers?), the people through whom you find what you?re looking for online (?Internet Search Engines?), the people who facilitate your online transactions (?Payment Network Providers?), and the people who help you promote your business enterprise (?Internet Advertising Services?).

What?s more, they can (mostly) all be implicated under SOPA if the US Attorney General, or a rights holder says-so. The result is a two-pronged approach whereby injunctive relief may be sought against a website containing infringing material, and at the same time, one of our online service providers may be obliged to choke-off (?prevent?) their services to that site.

To an extent, vesting such powers in a judicial office theoretically lends some legitimacy to the measures (which proved to be an issue in France, regarding the initial unconstitutionality of their HADOPI Law). However, as the more-developed case law across Europe demonstrates, such measures, by virtue of their operative effect, implicate any number of other issues of Law; few, if any, of which correspond to copyright: privacy, data protection, freedom of expression, and so(PA) on. There is nothing to suggest that things will be any different here.

However, it appears that the shoe is very much on the other foot regarding SOPA. Whilst comparable European measures may ultimately result in individual users having their Internet access terminated, the approach embodied in SOPA is one which can have much greater effect with regard to the existence and operation of websites and associated Internet services. It is for this reason, I believe, that the reaction from such providers has been so forceful, and perhaps why the process of this Act has stalled.

For me, this is the most interesting part of the SOPA story. There have been many instances where the lobbying power and legislative action of the content industries has resulted in changes to copyright law that benefit their own interests ? copyright term extensions in the US and Europe, the denial of P2P as a legitimate business enterprise, and the protection of, er, technical protection measures? In this instance, the responses to SOPA on the part of the ISPs have been striking and represent (to me) the first significant counterpoint to aggressive legislative measures against illegal copyright infringement. Nonetheless, this has not been due to some sort of inherent crusade on behalf of copyright; again it is the potential knock-on effects relating to, for example, censorship and freedom of expression.

So, it appears that SOPA has become a double-edged sword, involving ISPs who, on the one hand, possess the necessary resources to combat illegal copyright infringement, and, on the other, possess the necessary resources to dig their heels in and make a point. About time too.
