Oct. 4 Slate/Intelligence Squared U.S. debate.

Madrick: Yes, his worries are entirely unfounded. He's been exaggerating this issue forever. Here's the simple arithmetic according to the Congressional Budget Office forecast. The benefits for Social Security now come to nearly 5 percent of gross domestic product. The worst they will ever get when the entire baby boom retires is 6 percent of GDP. Now if you take one percentage point of GDP, which is now $15 trillion, so 10 percent is $1.5 trillion, and 1 percent is $150 billion, that's the increase. It sounds like a lot of money, but it comes from only 1 percent of GDP. People have to get that very clear in their heads. Medicare and Medicaid will rise much more rapidly as a proportion of GDP.

GOP to Planned Parenthood: Hand over records (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A Republican-led House panel has asked the Planned Parenthood Federation of America to hand over more than a decade's worth of documents in a probe of whether the organization improperly spends public money on abortions.

Democrats and Planned Parenthood supporters say the 90-year-old group is audited regularly and publicly and that the probe is the latest Republican run at shutting it down.

At issue is whether American taxpayers are unwittingly underwriting elective abortions, in violation of federal law. Absolutely not, says Planned Parenthood. But congressional Republicans are not so sure.

Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest provider of abortions and an array of other health services, is at the center of the fight. Republicans portray the organization as primarily focused on performing abortions, and charge that taxpayer funds for family planning and other health care services indirectly subsidized that role. They've launched multiple efforts this year alone to bar federal money from the group as long as it provides abortions. The Planned Parenthood Federation of America ? the formal name of the organization ? says taxpayer money is strictly separated.

"The committee has questions about the policies in place and actions undertaken by PPFA and its affiliates relating to its use of federal funding and its compliance with federal restrictions on the funding of abortions," Rep. Cliff Stearns, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce investigations subcommittee, wrote in a Sept. 15 letter to Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards.

Due by the end of the month: internal audits of how much Planned Parenthood received and spent in government money from 1998 to 2010. Stearns also requests any state audits of PPFA for the last 20 years that have not been made public, as well as a description for how "segregation between family planning and abortion services is accomplished," and how the practice is monitored for compliance.

"The American taxpayer does not want to be in the business of abortion, and this investigation is an important first step toward ending public funding of the nation's largest abortion provider," said Charmaine Yoest, president and CEO of Americans United for Life, which earlier this year conducted and presented to Stearns' committee its own study on Planned Parenthood.

Democrats say the group's 800-plus health centers nationwide provide an array of services, from screenings for cancer to testing for sexually transmitted diseases. Abortion, they say, is only one of Planned Parenthood's services. The law bars the group from using tax money for the procedure.

They cast Stearns as only the latest Republican to assail women's health services. The group is audited regularly by the Department of Health and Human Services' inspector general and state Medicaid programs, and the results are made public, the Democrats said in their response Tuesday.

"These audits have not identified any pattern of misuse of federal funds, illegal activity or other abuse that would justify a broad and invasive congressional investigation," Democratic Reps. Henry Waxman of California and Diana DeGette of Colorado wrote.

Planned Parenthood's Richards said in a statement that the investigation was really aimed at "undermining access to care." Nonetheless, the group was responding to Stearns' letter "in a timely manner."

Abortion politics nearly scuttled President Barack Obama's health care overhaul in the final hours of debate last year, and has popped up in the budget fights that have dominated the new, more conservative Congress since January. Since coming to power, the Republican majority in the House has tried to write permanently into law the ban on federal funds to perform abortions, to make it easier for hospitals to refuse abortion cases and to make it more expensive for small businesses to choose insurance plans that cover abortion under Obama's health care act.

Create a Customer Satisfaction Survey ... - Computers and Technology

A customer satisfaction survey is a popular and productive way to receive feedback that a business can use to improve their methods for success. By distributing a survey customers are likely to be more pleased with the business because it shows them that the business cares and also that they can have an input in what goes on. If enough people share similar information in a survey they can use that to make changes to improve the customer satisfaction.

There are many ways to go about creating a customer satisfaction survey. One can give out a physical copy of a survey, or they can do it through the process of interviews, or they can do it online, or whatever creative way they come up with. The way a company goes about giving the survey can have an impact on the effectiveness of the survey, but the most important thing is that it is done and that whatever type of survey created is quality and contains content that will be beneficial to the business and effective in helping them.

Customer satisfaction surveys can be very effective, but they should be created in a way that will most benefit the company. One has to be very thoughtful about their design. It needs to look good and be simple enough for everyone to understand yet professional at the same time. It needs to contain questions that customers are willing to answer and that?s answers will benefit the business in some way. Good survey software can be hard to create and do so in an efficient manner, but it will be worth it to make sure it is done well.

Customer satisfaction is important and crucial to the success of a business, which is why a customer satisfaction survey is so important and beneficial. If one believes they will benefit from offering a customer satisfaction survey but doesn?t know how to go about doing so they can consult with a professional and receive help in the matter.

Fresh Android Apps for Sep. 27: Cardcloud, Super Stickman Golf, Magic Defenders HD (Appolicious)

In today?s fresh apps, use Cardcloud to organize business cards, Super Stickman Golf as an adult version of Angry Birds, and Magic Defenders to teach evil Orcs a thing or two.

As the title suggests, this app connects your Android device to a cloud for your business cards ? both cards about you and cards you collect from others.

Using your existing Cardcloud account or register new from the app. Create multiple cards for yourself ? if you freelance in more than one capacity for example ? and send them to others. When creating cards about others, include details you don?t normally see in contact dbs including where and when you met the person.

If people nearby also have the Cardcloud app you can beam cards directly to them.

The folks at the club will pick this physics fling game over Angry Birds every time ? it?s basically golf without the goofy pants or the ?19th hole? bar.

Lots of obstacles stand between the golfer and the hole, including massive water hazards, towers, and caves. Fortunately, you have golf balls with special powers like ice for freezing water, super balls for extra bounce, and air brakes for stopping on a dime.

Play 33 courses and over 290 holes. Then, taunt your friends using the OpenFeint leaderboards and achievements.

Tower defense like you?re never seen it before. A peaceful village lives out a meager existence in a fantasyland. Meanwhile, angry Orcs are hunger for peasant meat.

Select your magical heroes to repel the invasion in three different scenes: near the forest, along the town?s defensive wall, and inside the town. Freeze, burn, and blast back the Orcs with overwhelming force. But, if you miscalculate your tower defense positions or powers and let even one Orc through, you and the other villagers are lunch.

New heroes get added to the game regularly. OpenFeint brings in competition from around the world.

Sexual Fitness for Women Using Mind & Body | Health

Sexual Fitness for Women Using Mind & Body

Like men, sexual health is an important aspect of your life. Although you may not think about sex or connect sexuality to your ego as men do, it remains a very important facet to quality of life. As a consultant to a dietary supplement company writing educational articles and practicing many years as a clinical psychologist, I have personally counseled and advised women on their sexual issues and endeavors for optimal sexual health. After years of experience in the field of psychology, I have come up with some practical recommendations for you to practice in order to optimize your sexual potential. Although written for a woman, men should read this article and support their female partner at all costs. Like many healthcare professionals, I believe in taking a holistic approach to sexual health and fitness.

The first step is to make your sexual fitness a daily goal. Just as frequent exercise is necessary for physical health, regular exercise and attention paid to your sexual being is vital. This is not to say you need to fixate on your sexual health and welfare as men do, but knowing yourself, your partner, and psychological well-being directly links to optimal sexual health. Just as you have a physical fitness regimen, so too should you devise a sexual fitness regimen. I do not mean you need to think and engage in sex as frequently as you exercise, but thinking daily about sexuality is not only healthy, I highly recommend it.

Physical well-being is paramount to your sexual health. This is why it is important to have an excellent open relationship with your doctor and/or gynecologist. There are many medical conditions that can impact a woman?s sexual well-being only she and her doctor can explore. From painful intercourse to a lack of sexual appetite, these problems can sometimes be rooted in a medical cause that can be treated with medication or doctor recommended steps. The key is feeling comfortable to discussing sexual issues with your doctor. There are millions of women who suffer from hormonal and medically based conditions. These same conditions though can be treated and sometimes cured with the help of a doctor.

Psychological well-being is crucial to your sexual health. Stress, anxiety, depression, and past traumatic experiences can all negatively influence sexual functioning. Just as a woman seeks medical advice from her doctor, a visit to a psychologist specializing in women?s issues may also be necessary to reduce mental health issues and past traumatic experiences from being problematic. A psychologist is a doctoral level clinician who is trained to diagnose and treat psychological issues which may impact a woman?s capacity to engage in sex in a comfortable manner. Although psychological conditions exist and require counsel, many women have emotional issues that can be addressed on their own or with a loved ones help. Unlike men, women seem impacted more by their environment than does their male counterparts. This is not to suggest men insulate themselves from their life stressors, but women tend to internalize these stressors more often and allow these life stressors to detract from their want, need, and desire for sexual engagement. Learning what life stressors are impeding their ability to practice regular sexual fitness can alleviate some of the obstacles causing sexual appetite and desire issues

As mentioned above, your sexual well-being is connected to the way you feel about yourself and the environment. Women are born, bred, and socialized to fixate on the way they appear to others. If you have a poor self-image or low self-esteem, it is almost impossible to engage in a healthy sexual lifestyle. It is truly unfortunate our society still places massive pressure on women to be thin, svelte, and seductive in appearance. Because of these societal expectations, women become far too involved in perceiving and feeling ?less than? or unattractive to others. This is not to say you should not exercise or practice self-image improvement, but the negative self-image a woman often feels when she?s not to the level she thinks she should be will always directly impact her ability to feel sensual, sexual, and provocative.

Whereas men tend to fixate on their sexual prowess, women seem to fixate on their image as it appears to the outside world. The goal is to reduce this fixation of being your most attractive at all times and then working towards self- acceptance. When you feel reasonably secure about your image, you become vastly more comfortable feeling as a sexual creature that not only deserves attention, but also expects sensual interactions. Speaking to a psychologist, friend, or loved one can help you meet the goal of a healthy self-image.

Women are socialized to be incredible communicators and adept at expressing their feelings. You learn early in development the benefits of discussing your concerns to others as being both healthy and necessary to optimal psychological well-being. Unfortunately, men are not socialized this way and tend to lack the confidence or motivation to communicate to their loved ones about their sexuality. Although men suffer this proverbial disability to discuss their sexual issues to others, women can also be hesitant to discuss sexual matters with others. The key for you is to feel comfortable expressing your sexual thoughts and concerns with the ones you are engaging in sexual practices with. Your male counterpart may not appear to be listening or concerned with your sexual needs. The secret reality is your male counterpart will usually welcome whatever advice you give him since his ego is connected to your sexual perception of him. There are men who truly are clueless about women?s needs and expectations, but if you believe in practicing sexual fitness, you will quickly educate him.

Self-awareness is essentially, ?Know Thy Self?. Despite religious and societal interpretations of masturbation and self-stimulation, it is highly recommended for you to know what arouses you sexually and helps puts you in a sensual mood. Self stimulation and masturbation is like exercise for the sexual senses. The more you know what arouses you, the better you will be at communicating to others what heightens your sexual prowess. The only way to communicate what your sexual trigger points are is to know what places on your body arouses you. Men have communicated to me in counseling on numerous times confusion about the female anatomy. They also confess they do not know how to touch and talk to their partner hoping to heighten her arousal. Women too often do not recognize what their sexual triggers are. Self-stimulation and masturbation helps you to recognize what arouses you and teaches how to identify the areas of your body that are sensitive to sensual touch. Masturbation not only educates a woman, but also has suggested in clinical studies to be a healthy behavior contributing to an increased sense of physical well-being. The more a woman is educated about her anatomy, and areas of sexual sensitivity can only positively contribute to her sexual life. The key is regularly practice self-stimulation as often as possible in order to achieve sexual fitness.

There are women who do not practice self stimulation or masturbation due to religious, philosophical, or for moral reasons. There are also women who do not practice masturbation because they simply don?t have the time due to work, children, or household responsibilities. When these reasons for not taking the time to practice self stimulation are apparent, then the next best thing is practicing sexual fantasy. There have been studies that have suggested men think about sex from every 10-15 seconds to every several minutes. There are no known studies that I have come across that have determined how often women think about sex. Although there may be these studies, I have not had the opportunity to review them. If there are such studies, I can almost guarantee women?s frequency of sexual thoughts are not nearly as frequent as men. Not to say that you should fantasize about sex as often as men, but I do recommend spending a little time each day engaged in sexual fantasy. To fantasize about sex is not only healthy for the mind and body, but it is great for stress management as well. Sexual thoughts and periods of sexual fantasy can also help you better understand your own thoughts and needs and teach you to be comfortable with sexuality in general. Fantasy is fantasy. There are no boundaries when it comes to an arousing sexual fantasy. The act of thinking about sex contributes to your positive feelings of well-being and potential increased urges of sexual desire.

In conclusion, volumes of books and videos have been produced to assist women in increasing their sexual prowess and appetite. I alone could spend hours writing about what I?ve heard from women seeking healthy sexual functioning. The goal for you is to understand how important it is to spend time thinking about your sexual self and how much better life becomes when you regularly engage in sexual exploration. A woman, like a man, is a sexual creature. The key for you is to endeavor upon using a holistic approach to obtain your optimal sexual functioning. The mind, body, and spirit all work synergistically to help you feel as a sexual creature with urges and needs. Sexuality may be a taboo subject for some, but it is clearly a mandatory part of our species survival. In its finite form, sexuality and the goal of sex is for the purpose of procreation. All animals procreate for survival of their species. Although procreation is the evolutionary goal of sex, that does not mean you have to relinquish your right to healthy sexual functioning and enjoyment. Men need to emphasize less the importance of sex, and women need to emphasize more their capacity for sexual enjoyment and deep yearning for sensual intimacy. Sexual fitness is an activity that requires you to think about and practice each day.

Social TV: 5 Ways for Showrunners to Engage Their Audience (omg!)

Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter recently announced he'd be flying two of his blog and Twitter followers to L.A. to watch an episode of the show at his house. It's extreme, for sure, but it's also the perfect example of an unconventional way for showrunners to engage with fans. Below, Kendall Aliment of ID-PR suggests five creative ways for showrunners to interact with viewers, and maximize their exposure in the process.

1. Stay connected all week long. Remember: Your show is only on for (at the most) 42 minutes a week, but fans need to be connected to your content during all the days in between. Ask yourself, "What can I give them that's going to keep them engrossed in the characters and interested in tuning in every week?"

Fall Preview: Get scoop on your favorite returning shows

2. Put casting and creative elements into the community's hands. For example, if you're looking for a new piece of art to hang in a character's bedroom on set, post a call to action and have people send in their work.Showrunners have an amazing opportunity to crowdsource, since they're the ones who get to dictate what's going to be on the air.

3.Encourage the entire crew to participate. Sometimes it's the writers, directors and producers that have the most interesting information to share, as they are the ones creating the stories. We've seen on Twitter that some of the funniest, most entertaining voices on a show (and the most followed accounts) are the people behind the scenes. Try live-tweeting an episode from the writers' room or the director's chair. These people provide a totally different perspective and can give fun insights about, say, which jokes were cut and why, alternate endings and teasers into what we might expect in next week's episode.

From Urkel to Sheldon: Check out our favorite TV nerds

4.Don't want to tweet in real time? No problem! One of the big concerns we see from showrunners is that they don't want anyone to post from set for fear of giving away story lines, new characters, cliff-hangers etc. It's understandable. In these cases, we encourage talent and crew members to capture tons of photos and video clips on set and then be discretionary when uploading. Have them post anything that isn't "sensitive," such as photos of rehearsal or of castmates in hair and makeup or hanging out between takes. Then ask them to catalog everything that might be considered a "spoiler" until the week that specific show airs. It will also help to build buzz around a specific episode.

Photo timeline: The emasculation of men on TV

5. Think of ways to reach new audiences. Last year, No Ordinary Family hired Shaycarl, a huge YouTube personality from Maker Studios, to guest-star on an episode. During filming, and prior to the show airing, he posted YouTube videos about it, and promoted it all over his Facebook and Twitter. His whole community ? more than 1 million subscribers ? were motivated to tune in and support the show, and No Ordinary Family saw a huge spike in ratings that week that they could only attribute to his guest appearance. So when you're casting, think outside the box ? don't just go for another actor. Go for someone who has a strong, supportive online community. It's a way to deliver your show to a whole new audience.

Remains of satellite may never be found, NASA says (Reuters)

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) ? A six-ton NASA science satellite crashed to Earth on Saturday, leaving a mystery about where a ton of space debris may have landed.

The U.S. space agency said it believes the debris ended up in the Pacific Ocean, but the precise time of the bus-sized satellite's re-entry and the location of its debris field have not been determined.

The Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, or UARS, ended 20 years in orbit with a suicidal plunge into the atmosphere sometime between 11:23 p.m. on Friday and 1:09 a.m. EDT on Saturday (0323 to 0509 GMT Saturday), NASA said.

The satellite would have been torn apart during the fiery re-entry, but about 26 pieces, the largest of which was estimated to have weighed 330 pounds (150 kg), likely survived the fall, officials said.

As it fell to Earth, UARS passed from the east coast of Africa over the Indian Ocean, then the Pacific Ocean, across northern Canada and the northern Atlantic Ocean to a point over West Africa. Most of the transit was over water, with some flight over northern Canada and West Africa, NASA said.

"Because we don't know where the re-entry point actually was, we don't know where the debris field might be," said Nicholas Johnson, chief orbital debris scientist at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. "We may never know."

Stretching 35 feet long and 15 feet in diameter, UARS was among the largest spacecraft to plummet uncontrollably through the atmosphere, although it is a slim cousin to NASA's 75-tonne (68,000 kilogram) Skylab station, which crashed to Earth in 1979.

Russia's last space station, the 135-tonne (122,000 kilogram) Mir, crashed into the Pacific Ocean in 2001, but it was a guided descent.

NASA now plans for the controlled re-entry of large spacecraft, but it did not when UARS was designed.

The 13,000-pound (5,897 kg) satellite was dispatched into orbit by a space shuttle crew in 1991 to study ozone and other chemicals in Earth's atmosphere.

It completed its mission in 2005 and has been slowly losing altitude ever since.

With most of the planet covered in water and vast uninhabited deserts and other land directly beneath the satellite's flight path, the chance that someone would be hit by falling debris was 1-in-3,200, NASA said.

"The risk to public safety is very remote," it said.

The satellite flew over most of the planet, traveling between 57 degrees north and 57 degrees south of the equator.

UARS was one of about 20,000 pieces of space debris in orbit around Earth. Something the size of UARS falls back into the atmosphere about once a year.

AP IMPACT: Hospital drug shortages deadly, costly (AP)

TRENTON, N.J. ? A severe shortage of drugs for chemotherapy, infections and other serious ailments is endangering patients and forcing hospitals to buy life-saving medications from secondary suppliers at huge markups because they can't get them any other way.

An Associated Press review of industry reports and interviews with nearly two dozen experts found at least 15 deaths in the past 15 months blamed on the shortages, either because the right drug wasn't available or because of dosing errors or other problems in administering or preparing alternative medications.

The shortages, mainly involving widely-used generic injected drugs that ordinarily are cheap, have been delaying surgeries and cancer treatments, leaving patients in unnecessary pain and forcing hospitals to give less effective treatments. That's resulted in complications and longer hospital stays.

Just over half of the 549 U.S. hospitals responding to a survey this summer by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, a patient safety group, said they had purchased one or more prescription drugs from so-called "gray market vendors"_ companies other than their normal wholesalers. Most also said they've had to do so more often of late, and 7 percent reported side effects or other problems.

Hospital pharmacists "are really looking at this as a crisis. They are scrambling to find drugs," said Joseph Hill of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

A hearing on the issue was set for Friday before the health subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The Food and Drug Administration is holding a meeting Monday with medical and consumer groups, researchers and industry representatives to discuss the shortages and strategies to fight them.

The FDA says the primary cause of the shortages is production shutdowns because of manufacturing problems, such as contamination and metal particles that get into medicine.

Other reasons:

? Companies abandoning the injected generic drug market because the profit margins are slim. Producing these sterile medicines is far more complicated and expensive than stamping out pills, and it can take about three weeks to produce a batch. Making things worse, companies don't have to notify customers or the FDA that they've stopped making a medicine. That means neither FDA nor competitors can fill the gap in time.

? Only a half-dozen companies make the vast majority of injected generics. Even if other companies wanted to begin making a generic drug in short supply, they're discouraged by the lengthy, expensive process of setting up new manufacturing lines and getting FDA approval.

? Theft of prescription drugs from warehouses or during shipment.

? Secondary, "gray market" vendors who buy scarce drugs from small regional wholesalers, pharmacies or other sources and then market them to hospitals, often at many times the normal price. These sellers may not be licensed, authorized distributors.

Hospitals that buy scarce medicines from the "gray market" are taking a gamble.

The drugs may be stolen and hospitals can't always tell whether a medicine was properly refrigerated ? as required for many injectable drugs ? or whether it's past the expiration date, said Michael R. Cohen, a pharmacist and president of the institute. Either way, the active ingredient might have degraded and the drug might not work well or could harm the patient, he said.

Cohen attributes at least 15 recent deaths to drug shortages based on reports by medical personnel, but says many deaths and injuries go unreported.

In the worst known case, Alabama's public health department this spring reported nine deaths and 10 patients harmed due to bacterial contamination of a hand-mixed batch of liquid nutrition given via feeding tubes because the sterile pre-mixed liquid wasn't available.

So far this year, 210 drugs have been added to the list of drugs in short supply, one less than the total for all of last year, according to the University of Utah Drug Information Service, which tracks the shortages. That's triple the roughly 70 a year from 2003 to 2006, when shortages began to climb steadily.

"The shortages aren't resolving. They're piling up on top of existing ones," said Erin Fox, a pharmacist who manages the service. She said at least 55 drugs from shortages before this year are still unavailable or scarce.

The average price markup on drugs sold by secondary distributors was 650 percent, according to an Aug. 16 report by the Premier Healthcare Alliance, a group that helps U.S. hospitals and other health providers improve their patient care and finances. The report is based on an analysis of 636 unsolicited sales offers that were faxed and emailed to hospitals from secondary distributors in April and May.

Virtually every offer was for at least double the normal price, the survey found. The drugs with the highest markups were for critically ill patients needing anesthesia or other medicines for surgery or for emergency care, cancer, infectious diseases and pain management.

In an extreme case, one vendor was offering a generic drug for dangerously high blood pressure, normally priced at $25.90 per dose, for $1,200.

So far, hospitals have been absorbing the extra costs, but they'll soon have to start passing them on to insurers and patients, according to the American Hospital Association.

Hospitals sometimes have to cave in to save patients, according to Cohen and several hospital pharmacy directors.

The FDA says it must uphold quality standards but also works hard to prevent shortages.

"When FDA detects a contaminant, whether it be shards of glass or metal particles or an infectious agent, we have to take action to protect the public," said Dr. Peter Lurie, a senior adviser in the FDA commissioner's office.

When such problems force a company to shut down production, the FDA urges other manufacturers to boost their output and expedites any approvals needed, said Valerie Jensen, associate director of FDA's drug shortage program. When raw materials used to make drugs are in short supply, the FDA tries to find new sources.

The agency averted 38 shortages last year, Jensen added.

Legislation pending in the House and Senate would increase penalties for drug thefts from warehouses and tractor-trailers. Another proposal, which has bipartisan support, would require drug manufacturers anticipating a shortage to immediately notify the FDA.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D.-Minn., the primary sponsor of the Senate version of the notification bill, said other solutions being considered include better tracking of medicine shipments, mandatory accreditation of distributors, stockpiling of key drugs and allowing routine imports of prescription drugs from countries such as Canada.

Distributors that supply about 90 percent of prescription drugs to hospitals buy direct from drug manufacturers and deliver only to customers with appropriate licenses, said John Parker, a spokesman for the Healthcare Distribution Management Association. He said HDMA members don't participate in the "gray market" but would not comment further.

The pitches hospitals get from the secondary distributors generally say they have small batches of specific drugs that are hard or impossible to find. "Are you enjoying this crazy `roller coaster ride' of pharmaceutical shortages? ... I utilize over 60 vendors to locate and procure needed pharmaceuticals to assist when you have shortage needs," one reads.

Several distributors who sent hospitals solicitations for scarce drugs didn't return calls from the AP. One representative said he wasn't authorized to discuss the issue.

One company, Novis Pharmaceuticals, defended the higher prices, saying secondary distributors have to charge far more because they don't get the big rebates manufacturers give primary distributors. They also have high costs to locate and transport batches of scarce drugs, although the company, which mainly distributes blood plasma, would not disclose its profit margin.

It's illegal for companies to create a monopoly or collude to create a medicine shortage and raise prices, but there's no evidence of that. There's no federal law against price-gouging on prescription drugs, according to the FDA, but it does urge pharmacists to report cases to its Office of Criminal Investigation. An agency spokeswoman said she could not discuss whether any cases are being investigated.

The top three wholesalers say they try to alleviate problems by working with drug manufacturers, updating hospitals on shortages and rationing scarce supplies by giving their regular hospital customers a portion of their normal order. McKesson Corp. and Cardinal Health Inc. say they halt sales to any smaller distributors found to be diverting drugs or otherwise breaking rules. AmerisourceBergen Corp. does background checks on customers.

The hospital association and other groups urge hospitals not to buy from unaccredited vendors, to insist on documentation of the drug's source if they must, and to report price gouging to state authorities. But only three states ? Kentucky, Maine and Texas ? have price-gouging laws that specifically cover medicines.

"Something has to be done here," said pharmacist Michael O'Neal, head of drug procurement for Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, which has had to purchase medicines from secondary suppliers about 70 times over the past two years.

"This is unethical," he said. "We're talking about people's lives."

Poland's jobless rate down to 11.6 pct in August (AP)

WARSAW, Poland ? Government statistics show that Poland's jobless rate inched down to 11.6 percent in August from 11.7 the previous month.

The Central Statistical Office said Friday that 1.85 million people in the country of 38 million were registered as jobless at the end of August. It was almost 8,000 fewer unemployed compared to July but more than 55,000 fewer than in August 2010.

The drop in the jobless rate was due to seasonal jobs in agriculture, construction, tourism and forestry, as well as from buoyant economic growth. Poland's economy is growing at about 4 percent this year, though it is expected to slow to about 3 percent growth next year due to the economic turmoil in Europe.

Poland has faced high unemployment since the ex-communist country adopted a market economy in 1990.

Knox trial: Italian prosecutors sum up their case (AP)

PERUGIA, Italy ? Italian prosecutors urged an appeals court Friday to uphold the murder conviction of Amanda Knox despite what they called a media campaign in support of the American student, asking the jurors to think instead of the young victim whose life was brutally ended.

In the first round of closing arguments that took seven hours Friday, the prosecutors summed up circumstantial evidence, testimony and other clues they believe point solely to Knox and Raffaele Sollecito. They sought to move past a recent independent review of genetic evidence, which cast doubt on key traces used to link the defendants to the murder and dealt a significant blow to the prosecution's case.

"All clues converge toward the only possible result of finding the defendants guilty," Prosecutor Giancarlo Costagliola said.

Prosecutors will wrap up their arguments Saturday. They could seek stiffer sentences, including life imprisonment or ask the court to uphold the current jail terms. A verdict is expected at the end of September or early October.

Knox and Sollecito were convicted of sexually assaulting and murdering Knox's British roommate, Meredith Kercher, on the night of Nov. 1, 2007, when they were all students in Perugia. Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison; Sollecito to 25. Both deny wrongdoing and have appealed the lower court's verdict in December 2009.

Speaking in a packed courtroom, the prosecutors sought to focus the jury's attention on Kercher and her family's pain, against a backdrop of what they described as media fascination with the photogenic Knox.

Costagliola urged the jurors to try and "feel a little bit like the parents of Meredith Kercher." Another prosecutor, Giuliano Mignini, said he will never forget Kercher's wide open eyes when he inspected the crime scene. He then juxtaposed gruesome photos from the murder with a snapshot of the defendants kissing shortly after Kercher's body was found.

"The victim has sunk into an absolute and shameful oblivion, made more intolerable by the media's morbid exaltation of the two people sitting on the defendant's bench," Mignini said. He urged jurors not to be deceived by the defendants' clean-cut appearances, saying "there's a dark side in all of us."

The prosecutors argue that the 21-year-old Kercher was the victim of a drug-fueled sex assault. In the first trial, the prosecutors had sought life sentences ? Italy's stiffest punishment. Like the defendant, they have also appealed the lower court's verdict, as they can in Italy.

On Friday, the prosecutors reviewed their case in great detail: bloody footprints found in the house that are compatible with those of the defendants, cell phone activity and witness testimony that appear to contradict the defendant's alibi that they spent the night at Sollecito's house and stayed there until about 10 a.m. the day after the murder, and a staged burglary at the house of the murder aimed at sidetracking the investigation.

They reminded the court that Knox initially gave contradicting accounts on the night of the murder, at one point accusing a Congolese man who was briefly arrested as a result of that claim, and later cleared. Knox maintains she acted under police pressure when she was questioned in the aftermath of the killing.

The prosecutors also addressed the results of an independent review of DNA evidence, which said much of the genetic evidence used to convict Knox and Sollecito was faulty.

In the first trial, prosecutors maintained that Knox's DNA was found on the handle of a kitchen knife believed to be the murder weapon, and that Kercher's DNA was found on the blade. They said Sollecito's DNA was on the clasp of Kercher's bra as part of a mix of evidence that also included the victim's genetic profile.

The independent review, carried out by two court-appointed experts, challenged both findings. It said police had made glaring errors in evidence-collecting and that below-standard testing and possible contamination raised doubts over the attribution of DNA traces, both on the blade and on the bra clasp, which was collected from the crime scene several weeks after the murder.

The review boosted Knox's chances and gave hope to her family that the 24-year-old might be freed after four years behind bars. Without a clear motive and decisive witnesses, DNA emerged as a crucial element in the case.

But the prosecutors tried to play down the significance of the review, insisting it was sketchy and superficial and telling the court there was more to their case.

"It's not just about the clasp and the knife," Mignini said. Speaking of the risk of contamination, he said the review failed to back up the claim: "Contamination of what? With what? When? How?" he asked.

Mignini, who served as prosecutor in the first trial, resurrected some of the prosecution's case from then, mentioning Kercher's purported promiscuity, the presence of a vibrator in the house, her use of drugs and her supposed tensions with Kercher.

Gesticulating, using sarcastic comments and making citations in Latin and French, Mignini appeared to capture the jurors' attention despite his lengthy exposition. Nearby, a tense, worn-out looking Knox watched attentively.

"I'm sure today it was stressful for her. Listening to people tell a bunch of lies about her is difficult," said Knox's mother, Edda Mellas, who flew to Italy on Thursday for the final stretch of the proceedings. "But we know we have to go through this part to get to the end."

"I don't think they presented anything that contradicts anything," Mellas added.

A lawyer for Sollecito, Giulia Bongiorno, told reporters that, weakened by the results of the review, the prosecution was merely "rehashing old clues, feeble and inconsistent arguments."

Mignini reserved some of his toughest words for Knox's character, which he described as "insensitive and lacking affection" in the aftermath of the murder, and called her a liar. But he also spoke harshly of the supposed role of the media, which he said was intent on discrediting the Italian judicial system.

Mignini said the prosecution was "subjected to systematic denigration of a political and media nature." He denounced the "armchair detectives who give their opinions from remarkable superficiality and approximation from 5,000 kilometers (3,000 miles), 10,000 kilometers (more than 6,000 miles) away."

"The trial must be held here, in this courtroom," Mignini told the jurors. "This lobbying, this media and political circus, this heavy interference, forget all of it!"

With young and attractive defendants and tales of sex and drugs, the case has captivated audiences worldwide, drawing international media to Perugia since the beginning. On Friday, as the appeals trial draws to a close, the underground courtroom was packed with cameras, reporters and scores of curious residents.

A third person, Rudy Hermann Guede of the Ivory Coast, also has been convicted of Kercher's murder in a separate proceeding. Italy's highest criminal court has upheld Guede's conviction and his 16-year-prison sentence. Guede denies wrongdoing, though he admits he was in the house.

The prosecutors noted that Guede himself testified months ago that he believes Knox and Sollecito killed Kercher. They pointed out that Italy's highest court said in its ruling that Guede had not acted alone.

However, the court's ruling does not name Knox and Sollecito as Guede's accomplices.

Curiously, the prosecution's call not to forget the victim was similar to what Curt Knox said on the eve of their summations.

"What's lost out of this thing is the Kercher family and the loss of their daughter Meredith," Knox told The Associated Press in an interview Thursday.

"We have not personally reached out yet because I would like them to know that Amanda had nothing to do with the loss of their daughter," he said. "And until they know that Amanda had nothing to do with it, I'm not certain how they would accept our heartfelt condolences for the loss of their daughter."

The Kerchers are expected to travel to Perugia for the verdict.

AP Interview: German Jewish leaders meet pope (AP)

BERLIN ? More than seven decades after the end of World War II, the German-born pope is meeting with Jewish leaders in the historic Reichstag parliament in what was once the heart of the Nazi capital.

Dieter Graumann, Germany's top Jewish leader, however, refused to dramatize a meeting that could be considered historic ? suggesting just how much Germany has changed in the decades since.

In an interview with The Associated Press, the head of Germany's Central Council of Jews responded to a question about its historic importance matter-of-factly.

"I think it is a wonderful sign that the pope is taking time right at the beginning of his busy schedule for us," Graumann said.

"It is a signal of friendship, of big-heartedness and underlines that the relationship between the Roman Catholic church and Judaism has improved considerably in the past few decades," said Graumann, who moved to Germany as a child from his birthplace of Israel. He was appointed the nation's top Jewish leader last year.

Benedict's four-day visit is the third to his homeland. During his first trip months after becoming pope in 2005, Benedict took time out of commitments to young Catholics gathered for World Youth Day to visit Cologne's main synagogue. In 2006, he made a pastoral trip to his Bavarian homeland. That same year, he denounced the mass murder of Europe's Jews during a visit to the former Nazi death camp of Auschwitz in neighboring Poland.

Yet Benedict, 84, angered many Jews in 2009 with the decision to rehabilitate a Holocaust denier as bishop along with three other clergymen, all members of the ultraconservative Society of St. Pius X.

This move, along with his revival of a prayer for the conversion of Jews remain sore points that Graumann said he would not shirk from addressing during the meeting.

"I think that the level of friendship we share also demands that we address what hurts us," Graumann said.

Still, the 61-year-old Jewish leader said he hoped the overwhelming message to emerge from the meeting would be positive.

"There is so much more that binds us, than divides us. As Catholics ? as Christians ? and Jews, we have very strong common roots," Graumann said. "I think we need to say that more often, and louder."

  • LDL ? low density lipoprotiens
  • VLDL ? very low density lipoproteins
  • Chylomicrons ? large lipoproteins

?

All of these particles are necessary for the body to function, but only HDL is beneficial when it is high. VLDL cholesterol is made up mostly of triglycerides, with very little protein. This is why is presents a problem and raises risk for heart disease. Understanding cholesterol helps us find ways to neutralize it?s adverse affects, by finding ways of naturally lowering cholesterol.

Very low density?means that this particle has the most fat of the five. Since fat oxidizes most readily, this particle can do the most damage to your arteries, eventually leading to coronary disease. You don?t need to get too hung up on vldl vs dld cholesterol level. They are both considered to be bad when they are elevated. You simply need to lower bad cholesterol.

The standard cholesterol profile that medicine uses to determine your heart disease risk is made up of:

?

  • LDL cholesterol level
  • HDL cholesterol level
  • VLDL cholesterol level

?

While doctors and scientists have identified all of these particles and their respective roles in the process of cardiovascular disease, the basis for treating them remains simple. You need to focus on limiting foods that are high in cholesterol, and helping the body get rid of excess cholesterol more efficiently.

VLDL cholesterol ? how to lower it

Remember that you are trying to lower bad cholesterol in general. There are five things you need for naturally lowering cholesterol.

They are:

?

  • Limit consumption of cholesterol rich foods
  • Get plenty of fiber
  • Take nutritional supplements (like niacin and other antioxidants)
  • Brief intense exercise like interval training 15 min 3 times per week
  • Body grounding

?

Understanding cholesterol and it?s vital role in the body is necessary to deal with it safely and effectively. Statin drugs are clearly not a safe way to do this, and surprisingly will not actually prevent heart attacks!

Drugs interfere with the proper functions of your cells and have toxic and dangerous side effects. Lowering cholesterol is a process of doing healthy things with nutrition and exercise which will bring your body into balance and prevent disease.

VLDL cholesterol?and it?s dangers can be neutralized through this natural approach. The results will significantly lessen your chances of getting heart disease, and result in an overall improvement in your health.
