Mention "The Three Stooges" and people quickly devolve into one of two groups. There's a group of people who never found even the classic Larry, Moe and Curly funny, and would rather get a root canal than see the 2012 movie. And there are those who find everything the trio has ever done hilarious, constantly quoting lines like "Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk" and "Oh, a wise guy, eh?" Those groups are also known as "women" and "men."
Oh, all right, that's not fair. Some women certainly do find the Stooges funny and some men don't get them. But regardless of gender, the new "Three Stooges" movie has some barriers to overcome. The trio appeared in more than 200 films throughout their career, but even their classic shorts are hard to come by these days. Even "The Curly Shuffle,"? a novelty hit citing the trio, is already 25 years old. Audiences have moved on. When it comes to physical humor and slapstick, kids are more likely to know the "Jackass" crew than Larry, Moe and Curly.
Story: If you're not starring in 'New Year's Eve,' you're not tryingAdd to this the fact that this film has been plagued with problems already, many of them public. It's got some things going for it, namely, the Farrelly Brothers. Who better than Peter and Bobby Farrelly, the goofballs behind "There's Something About Mary" and "Dumb and Dumber," to play up these physical comedy geniuses?
But the cast has been a problem. Remember hearing names like Sean Penn and Jim Carrey tossed around for the lead roles? Yeah, that didn't happen. Instead, the film stars Chris Diamantopoulos (a Canadian comedian) as Moe, Will Sasso (another Canadian comedian) as Curly, and Sean Hayes (from "Will & Grace") as Larry.
Maybe that's why the newly released poster is just a generic silhouette of the three famous Stooge shapes. You just know if they'd gotten Carrey or Penn, those famous mugs would be visible, not shrouded. And this way, should the cast change again, they won't even have to redo the poster.
