Figure Skating: So What About Those of Us Who Hate To Dance?
How about a new ice skating event based on an extreme skating model where jumps (especially multi rotational jumps, long jump combos, and even back flips) were emphasized as well as flying and traveling spins. Play hard rock or heavy metal music in the background (as they do in snowboarding or skateboarding events), but no choreography. I think this event would appeal to the guys and bring a lot more boys into the sport. Most boys object to figure skating because of the gaudy costumes and footwork/choreography (?dancing on the toes?) aspect of the sport that they see stereotyped. Why not put in an event like this for the more ?athletic? skaters, and leave traditional figure skating for the ?artistic? camp?
It already exists ? it?s called a ?Jump Event? and is offered at most ISI and USFSA non-qualifying competitions for skaters of all ages and levels. The level is determined by your current highest test passed. If there are enough entrants, the organizers group the skaters by age as well.
There are also spin, footwork and compulsory moves (freestyle elements) events.
Skaters in qualifying events are too focused on their short- and long-programs to enter these events, so it?s irrelevant to them. They wouldn?t be interested in it because they have the whole package: spins, jumps and skating skills.
The appeal would be to people looking for an extra event at a competition or those skaters who have limited freestyle skills.
