Norton AntiVirus (2013)

By Neil J. Rubenking

Windows 8 is just around the corner, and you can definitely see its influence in the new user interface of Norton AntiVirus . The main window of this powerful antivirus boasts large, touch-friendly buttons that rearrange fluidly as you navigate the program's features. Dig a little deeper, though, and you'll find all the fine-grained configuration options are still present.

Like Kaspersky, Symantec no longer identifies its security tools with year or version numbers. This should make it easier for them to roll out new features as they become ready, rather than waiting for a big release. Going forward, you'll almost never need to reboot in order to apply an update. Got an active subscription to the 2012 edition? You're eligible for an upgrade.

Team Cleanup
Norton AntiVirus installed with little fuss on nine of my twelve malware-infested test systems. On a couple systems, the installer detected and removed threats that might have interfered with the installation. A couple others ran into minor errors that the built-in AutoFix tool handled.

AutoFix couldn't repair a problem on one system, so I booted from the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool (NBRT). In addition to a full antivirus scanner, the disk now includes Norton Power Eraser, which solved that problem. Two other systems required a full scan by NBRT before I could complete the installation.

Effective Malware Removal
A full scan of my standard clean test system took 57 minutes; the current average is closer to 40 minutes. I'm not complaining about the time, as Norton did a good job cleaning up. In any case, after a reputation scan identified known good files, subsequent antivirus scans finished in about one tenth the time.

Norton detected 89 percent of the threats on my malware-infested systems, the same detection rate as Kaspersky Anti-Virus (2013) . Slightly better cleanup of detected threats gave Norton an edge. Its 6.6 point score for malware cleanup beats Kaspersky's 6.5 points.

Daily Safety Check Home Edition also got 6.5 points, and Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2013 came close with 6.4 points.

Like the three just mentioned, Norton detected 100 percent of the samples that use rootkit technology. Norton earned 8.4 points for rootkit removal, beaten only by Kaspersky with 9.4 points. For full details on how I analyze and score malware removal, see How We Test Malware Removal.
